I am african american and I have some native american cherokee in me.

Is it truly possible to get a free ride at any college of your choice because of this?

I am african american and I have some native american cherokee in me.

Is it truly possible to get a free ride at any college of your choice because of this?

No, it's not possible to get a free ride at any college of your choice.

Explain.........................

None of us folks who have multi ethnic backgrounds get to go to University for free. You can try to just start working hard with scholarships and look up scholarships only for African Americans as well. If you are part Native American, you kind of have to have a tribal council be able to look that up and claim you. If a tribal council claims you, you could go to a tribal college.

Hmmmm......no thanks.

But thanks for telling me. ;)

It is cool, buddyguy. Your nic is the name of a rocking bluesman:)

I know.

He is one of my blues guitar idol.

Actually merlinjones if he has enough native american blood in him he is eligible for federal money. He has to figure out what tribe and has to have a certain amount of that specific tribe's blood in him. Some tribes only require something like 1/32 while some require that you be 1/4 to be eligible.

buddyguy, that question is kind of wierd. It makes no sense really. i don't think colleges would give you a free ride based on ethnicity.

Do you really think that you could get into say.. Harvard or Yale if you had C's and D's and crappy test scores (not saying you do) Just because you had some unique heritage? not likely

No, it's not that easy, but you can qualify for lots of scholarships. Colleges like URMs but they also have to have great grades, scores, ECs.

Being an URM is just a little plus. I'd say the equivalent of coming from a school that "historically sends <50%" of their students to college.

Now, if you were born in some highly Native American territory, and against all odds, excelled in academics, as has never been in your school, that's somewhat of a bigger plus. Remember, they want motivated students that make the best out of what they have, not black or brown skin. It just so happens that the aforementioned skin colored people usually have less to work with. (That's a fact, and please nobody call me a racist! I am hispanic, so there!)

(Pardon my horrible knowledge of Native Americans, and if they even have "territories"... off to the library!)

And that's how I should be.

it already is. don't colleges always say: "blah blah....regardless of race, religion, gender and ethnicity."

I dont think it would. Maybe if you were 100% cherokee. Like a lot of people say "I'm part cherokee" but really not even 1% cherokee. Do you have any cherokee relatives that are not more than 3 generations away from you?

My grandfathers mother was cherokee............

is this a joke thread?

No.........I like jokes though.

I really don't want a free ride.

I'm just asking......I could careless.

I'm also doing this to jack up my post.

Glad I could waist your time,guys. ;)

actually there are such programs...u couldn't go to say Harvard....but many state colleges offer these programs...my mom went free on a black student first generation to college program...no great grades required she just had to be first generation going to colleges...there are others where u don't have to be first generation also but cc might not be the best place to learn about these programs since most people aren't minorities they don't have much knowledge of these programs.

If she's 100% cherokee then I think that makes you 1/8 or 12.5% cherokee
