I guess there's some guy playing prank here, that created Masterus and Sean123 for his (and I should say ours) amusement.

Buddyguy was just asking a question about scholarships and whatnot for ladies and gentlemen of color in a really casual fashion.

I liked how Buddyguy asked about this stuff in a casual fashion because the long posts with the stats of the poster in them are really getting a little old.

Buddyguy just casually asked something without posting his whole resume (if you will).

I would hope that no one trips out over a casual post.

It is never to early to learn about different scholarships, like the United Negro College Fund and the Tribal Councils for Native Americans. Those of us who are minorities have to at least acknowledge scholarships which pertain to our backgrounds as well as all of the scholarships which do not (like the National Merit Scholarships and whathaveyou).

You guys really have to iggy sean123/Masterus. Iggy the posts by just scrolling down and carrying on.

I actually agree with some of the stuff sean123 said. He wasn't being racist. People call other people that way too easily.

I mean, how does your skin color make you a minority?...
Does it really matter so much...I never thought of color as a heritage...?

well it wouldn't matter if people who weren't minorities would treat minorities equally. The government actually has to have quota's to make certain companies hirer any minorities at all rather they are qualified or not some companies don't want to hirer them. thats why color matters everybody makes it a big deal not just minorities...it is sad it is this way but honestly rather anybody wants to admit it or not everybody is a tad racist by nature so there is nothing we can really do about this.

^correct.

Way to many people miss those points.

In an ideal world, race would not matter. AA and such were made in hope of getting closer to that ideal and one day not needing such programs.

Afirmative action is so stupid....it lets stupid people control our society...

I think when O R factor on Fox news is good, but he has some really stupid people on the show...and i am for the war with Iraq

On the record with Gretta is a good show too

I like crammer, thats another good show

You're right. Non - minorities don't treat minorities equally. Minorities get special treatment. AA, special scholarships, etc. It's not fair.

Deal with some of the issues growing up that many minorities are predisposed by society to have to deal with, and then say it's not fair.

I'm done with addressing this issue in the midst of people, if even just a couple, who apparently aren't intelligent (aside from book-smarts) and aware enough to fully understand things like this.

There are whites that grow up in poor families, too! There's even homeless one's. I know this is going to give you a heart attack, but there are even white families that do drugs and commit serious crimes!

0.0

Yea, I live in the middle of it. Also, my mom is a criminologist and deals with many programs for "at risk" children, those who have already commited crimes, and their families.

Notice that I didn't say all minorities, and I didn't explicitly exclude white people. It's just that a greater percentage of minorities than non-minorities deal with the setbacks.

Thank you though, Jonathan, for being far more mature than sean, to whom I wouldn't have even responded.

Is Sean, Masterus?

Quite possibly.

Actually, hopefully. All we need is two different people like that. :/

No, it will not get you a free ride. Large percentage of Black Americans are of Native American descent.

OMG who cares if your black or white...DOES IT REALLY MATTER THAT MUCH?!

Oh my gosh you people are stupid...

Dont you get it!
We should not judge one as being part of a minority or on basis of his/her skin color. We should Base stuff on how they are as a INDIVIDUAL!!!!!!

thats the truth!

man, I wasn't going to reply to you but..

First off, I'm talking about minorities and non-minorities, not just "black" or "white."

Now,
It SHOULD NOT "REALLY MATTER THAT MUCH"
and you're right, "We should Base stuff on how they are as a INDIVIDUAL!!!!!!"

The key word I'm seeing here is SHOULD. I've said it before and I'll say it one last time, your beliefs are based on an idealistic world, which, don't get me wrong, would be great. But the fact is that not everyone thinks that, and there has also been a long history of discrimination, not just in the US, but everywhere, that can't just end by someone snapping their fingers. Because of that, AA and such have been created in attempt to erase the lines of minority and eventually give an equal chance to all. For now, this must be done by countering the inherent biases, racism, and disadvantages that still exist today.

Lastly, I think your view of exactly how AA works is a bit off. From what your posts say atleast, you seem to think that anyone who is a URM will get in anywhere despite poor grades, that simply is not the case. An elite college will not take a "dumb" person, or even an average person over an excellent one just because they are a URM.
If I'm correct, the UC's no longer follow AA due to California law, so go there if you really want.

i know i am part native american indian, but i don't know how much. is there a way to determine this so i could show colleges that i am part native american indian?

surfette you oculd get the Mormons to do your family tree. The bottom line with Native American's is that ultimately the tribe has to claim you. You could even go to the tribe, or contact the tribe and they might have records for your family.

I'm mildly against AA.
A professor I met at Cornell this summer made a decent case for it [AA], though. I won't go through all of it right now, but bear in mind that more often than not, URM applicants are in a [relatively] weaker socio-economic bracket. Also bear in mind varsity sports such as lacrosse, polo, squash, water polo, tennis, hockey, volleyball, crew, golf, sailing, fencing, etc. Those sports are played predominantly by white people. There are more sports similar to those listed above than there are sports like....basketball or football (african americans may appear to be more common on teams in those sports, though not always the case). This is especially true at LACs and Ivies. Also consider the fact that the vast majority of legacies (big advantage in admissions) are white.

In the end it's really not all that unfair. I agree that AA is horribly executed (I am against it), and I believe that advantages should be given based more on the socio-economic circumstances of the applicants than on their race.

No one is going to give a crap if you are a minority. If you get the grades a school want, thery'll take you, if not then they'll dump your applicastion in the trash. It's that simple.
