So how does the computer internet access work?

Say I have an SBC box now, how does the internet access work in college? do you still have to sign up with a phone company or do you just can turn on your computer than bam! there it is?

As for the phone landline, what is the process of getting one? I'm completely new at this.

What college are you going to/planning to attend?

Duke University. Number One Choice. Possibly UC Berkeley.

I suggest you post this in those fora then.

At Berkeley, there is wired high-speed internet access in all the dorms. Once you get there, you set up your connection for free* with ResComp (residential computing). Check out the site for info regarding all that:

<a href="http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/</a></p>

There is also AirBears, the wireless internet over the campus; to get into this, you just need to enter your ID. AirBears is available in many of the dorms, though they ask that you not burden the network when you have the availability of a wire connection (AirBears is more to allow you flexibility).

I surmise Duke and many other colleges work like this.

It's not technically free -- any more than "free" laundry -- but rather it's covered in your housing costs.
