How do they reconsider deferred applicants? Do they read all the RD applications first and then, after they've seen what their entire applicant pool is like, pull up certain deferred-EA applications that they think would be competitive for admission, and then just reject the rest without even reconsidering them (as in, they have some sort of deferral rating system where deferred applicants are pooled into certain categories based on their likelihood of admission in RD or something)? And, if they do re-read all deferred applications, do they consider us any differently than RD applicants?

-As well, I must point out that I do not assume that they do/do not do any of these things, but am merely asking these questions so that I can know more about how deferred applicants are considered. Also, does anyone know how many applicants were deferred?

I do not believe that deffered candidates will be read in a separate pile, so to speak, but I would not be surprised if EA deferees do receive an advantage in the admissions process for their early interest.

^Perhaps at Yale and Stanford, but Chicago does not have this same degree of selectivity. But if demonstrated interest is in an admission factor in any way, this would come to the benefit of the EA applicant.

MIT lets in a good number of EA deferrees in RD, but I’ve given up hope.

Chicago might not do it that way, but I feel pretty crappy about being deferred. At least applying EA will only help you. You’ve demonstrated interest, and that’s a lot for Chicago. I’d send in supplemental materials with your midyear report and a letter of interest saying how much you want to attend.

You can really only show that you’re awesome and interested. The rest is up to them. If you are good enough to be admitted, you will be (this isn’t true at MIT because of their AA policies, so yay! Chicago). Being in EA doesn’t give you a disadvantage. It really only helps you.

I have a feeling that our chances are slim to none considering they probably deferred many of us because they were uncertain of whether or not the RD pool would be as strong as the EA pool.
