Agh, I thought we were done with applications!

You want to write a 'Chances' thread for this as well? :D

Seriously speaking, I have no clue how they choose one person over the other, maybe they pull their admissions file and review it again or something. Anyone?

from what I hear, everyone who applies gets in, but not everyone gets his or her first choice.

The science programs are usually a lot more competitive than the others. Last year there were so many spots left over in the others that they let more people apply in June.

I don't really understant the FOCUS program.. does it count just as a single class?. As I had understood, we are gonna have 4 classes the first semester, then if I get into the FOCUS program, I'll have to take only 3 classes?
Anyone please help me understand it better! .. Thanks!

For CLASS of 2011 DUKIES who are applying to Focus, please check out one of the newest clusters debuting this Fall, which is based on an evolving approach to health care that is personalized, predictive, preventative & participatory. It's known as "Prospective Health Care" or "PHC" for short.

The Center for Research on Prospective Health Care at Duke spearheaded developing this cluster & we are 100% dedicated to Duke undergrads, which is why we founded the Duke undergrad PHC Club in 2005. So when you join this cluster, you have an immediate link to the Center & the Club.

Students with diverse interests are encouraged to apply. Our core courses are policy, history, psychology & immunology based.

Contact either Ziggy Yoediono, MD MBA or Max Masnick Duke '09 for further questions. Thanks!

andriuxs: You will need to take a minimum of 4 courses regardless of FOCUS unless you underload (which you are allowed to do for 1 semester over the course of 4 years).

Coursewise, the FOCUS program (from what the website says) is 2 seminars and a half credit discussion course. Those count as separate courses. Doing FOCUS only means that you are doing those courses in a block together and they pertain to a single overarching topic. In reality, you are still taking 4 courses, except your choice of the the FOCUS block courses will be limited.

thanks SBR! :D
SoOo, aside from the focus program, I can take math, writing, french and another more, right?
on more ¿? please!, is it mandatory to take writing the first semester?
Thanks guys! I don't know what I'd do without u guys!!

Andriuxs: I don't know how trinity does it but you are assigned a semester for writing in Pratt. When I was registering for fall semester, I was told that I have to take writing in the spring and accordingly I was not allowed to sign up for any writing 20 classes.

For those of you interested in COMMUNITY SERVICE, the Prospective Health Care cluster is working with the Durham Nativity School, a middle school for underprivileged boys, and other constituents to create a partnership where Duke students work closely with the middle school students to teach, learn and collaborate on a prospective health care project.

For those of you interested in TRAVEL, the Prospective Health Care cluster is in the nascent phases of hopefully setting up a short trip to Washington DC. We are collaborating with the Office of the Chancellor Emeritus at Duke University to develop this.

Stay tuned for more updates.

My dad called and spoke with the Sr. Coordinator for other reasons. She told my dad that there are about 40 applicants per each cluster of 30, so there is some competition but it's not like applying to Duke generally. About 85% of the applicants get into one of the clusters that they want to participate in.

There have been some really intense ones in the past (i.e. Exploring the Mind last year had 120 applicants for 30 spots). I think the selection process is pretty arbitrary though?

*Confirmed - The former CEO, President and Chancellor of Duke University Health System will be a special guest at the September 25 IDC.
