So... How hard is it?

I was just accepted the Rensselaer and intend on majoring in chemical engineering. I was wondering from anybody who studies engineering (preferably chemical) at rpi, how hard is it? How much time should I expect to study and do homework per night? How are the tests? Any information would be helpful. I just want to know what to expect.

The first 3 semesters are cake, after that it gets much harder.

I’d like to know this too.

I think it really relates to your time management skills and level of college prep in high school. If you glided through high school without even starting your engines, you’ll have to learn to organize and be efficient. My kids have plenty of time for extra curricular activities (music for one and EMT for the other) but they do work hard and organize their time. My observation is those with lower GPAs play too many video games.

If you didn’t have good time management skills in high school, the first semester will definitely be a wake up call. If you keep up with your work, expect at least 3 hours of work outside of class a day (this isn’t too bad, especially if you study between classes). If you wait until the last minute… expect to be up to 3 am some nights. Exam difficulty really depend on the professor and the class. If you know your stuff, they aren’t too horrible. Again, it really comes down to keeping up with your work.

I’ve heard that chemical engineering is one of the most difficult majors at RPI. Good luck!
