I'm an OOS accepted student who applied for financial aid. I have a low EFC.

Are there any current OOS students who can comment on their aid package, especially if they have a low EFC?

I'd like to know what to expect.

I'm not a current student but attended GT (OOS) from 2004-2008. My EFC was pretty high (something like $15K) - I was awarded max subsidized Stafford loans and a decent amount of scholarships/grants. For freshman and sophomore years, most of my calculated need (FAFSA) was met through the whole package. It was different (i.e. defiicient) for junior and senior years, but I co-oped so that probably affected it as well.

My understanding is that you "need" to keep a 3.0 GPA to maintain your scholarships/grants. I know this is not a hard number like the HOPE scholarships, but I thought I remembered reading on the FinAid website about a similar criterion for maintaining financial aid. I didn't have a problem with that, so I can't say for sure.

Thanks for the reply. It is very helpful.

No problem - I should mention a couple things.

1) I was only interested in subsidized loans. I’m sure I could have gotten more (or a PLUS loan through my parents) as an upperclassman to meet my financial “need.”

2) I was a strong applicant academically - so I’m guessing that helped, at least for freshman year.

But you’ll get your own financial aid package soon enough…

I called and they said that they are going to mail them out 1st week of april, but if the packages don’t come this week, it’s definitely going to be next week.

I’m very anxious for mine to come. At this point, GT is my first choice and I’d like to deposit but I have to see if its doable.

I’m nervous because I’m OOS and I heard they were not great when it came to FA. I have a low EFC so I really need some assistance, especially considering the extra costs associated with travel, etc.

Please be generous, GT!

I wonder how many kids could get free rides if crap like this were scaled down.

Do you know how awesome it will be to have that building on campus, pulling together so many functions that need to be and should be in one place? That building will be worth having, and a lot of alumni want to give to buildings, not scholarships. That building will help every freshman and sophomore, where as one scholarship helps that one student. That building will be the tide lifting all the ships. I’m thrilled we’re getting that building, and I can hardly wait until it’s finished!

Isn’t that thing sitting in the library parking lot?

Edit: I just took a look. That’s going to be a nice 7 story building (almost as tall as the Library).

I also noticed that they’re cutting off 4th Street so it won’t run all the way through past Physics. That’s a much needed change. There’s too much foot traffic between the CoC and Howey Physics to have cars driving through there.

Yeah it is.

Well GPBurdell32, I suppose it will be a shiny new building to go with our other shiny new buildings, but the guys in my department generally agreed a seven story building is a bit grandiose considering the budget cuts right now. I guess on the bright side it will free up space in the buildings of growing departments (like Physics)

From what I’ve seen, most of the funding comes from alumni/the state, but I’m sure at least 100 4-year full rides for OOS kids is coming from institute funds.

the difference with this one is it is for all of campus, part of the central administration, so it gets GT away from academic silos. Look at all the good that has come from a more active & powerful vice provost’s office: much better academic advising, a real pre-med advisor, the international plan, the research plan, a director for undergraduate research, an honors program, an office to help GT win more national fellowships, etc. None of that happened back when the admin was focused on each major school. 100 4 year full rides is about $15,000,000. This shiny new building will have significant impact on every freshman and sophomore. The last time GT built an academic building for the general good may have been . . . Skiles? :-)

Before the College of Management moved and Industrial Engineering conquered it, the IC was a school-wide academic building.

I guess the next question is what are they going to do about parking? It’s already tight on campus. Getting rid of the EE and Arch parking lots weren’t a big deal because of the Klauss deck, but the Library parking lot (and the street meters) takes away a big chunk of on-campus parking.

I forgot about IC.

I’d love to see a chart of the campus population growth over 30-40 years contrasted with the amount of parking spots on-campus.

Clearly the long-term trend will be less campus parking. If it were profitable to build decks, wouldn’t some entrepreneur have picked up some land nearby and built a deck? So, it must be expensive. I hope GT has decided it is impossible to keep up with demand for parking given current appetites, so therefore they are not keeping pace in order to alter the demand curve. Every person on campus does not need a car on campus.

As the number of OOS students increase, those students want to have cars to return home.

I would like to see parking move off campus - everything between North Ave, 10th Street, the Interstate, and Marietta Street should be walking and deliveries only. But, I still think Tech needs to provide parking with campus-perimeter decks, possibly by making multi-use buildings (like Klauss - parking deck underground, offices and classrooms above ground).

Yeah Klaus was a good idea. I’m not sure why the buildings built after didn’t use this same idea. Well actually I do know why they didn’t do it with Marcus (lot of sensitive equipment is going in the building).

lol, well, this thread kinda got off topic! But seriously, unless you don’t get scholarships, isn’t the financial aid full of loans?

I was a little disappointed with GT’s financial aid, to say the least… as it turns out, it will be cheaper for me to go to Columbia’s School of Engineering than Georgia Tech.
