Im thinking of attending usc or ucla and am from a st paul suburb. i am also very impatient especially when it comes to traffic. Is the traffic as bad as it seems in LA?

Traffic can get pretty bad, yes.

But there are ways of lessening the wait by taking different routes/times. It depends on where you're commuting from/to.

yes, very. rush hour on the 405 anyone? :p

its bad but there are shortcuts. i would never post them on a public forum though.

^ do i need a 4x4?

Get something comfortable with an automatic transmission. Do you like books on disk?

well the 4x4 works real well when youre cutting someone off and that person is driving a sedan :)

^ I don't see how (esp if said sedan also has 4x4), but whatever.

Yes traffic can suck terribly in LA (I have sat in traffic for 3 hours trying to get from UCLA to Orange County), but hey its how things are around here. Whats worse than the traffic is that people here are absolutely terrible drivers. And since the weather here is sunny most of the time, people have no idea how to handle a car in the rain, so when it rains, be careful.

Icarus, my friend, there are no more efficient drivers in the US than southern California drivers. I can only assume that you are young and have limited experience. I am old and have driven hundreds of thousands of miles around the US. Trust me.

sorry i dont know any shortcuts to san gabriel, thats pretty far. my limits are the westside, and certain parts of midcity and valley.

takes me nine minutes to get to home from UCLA (local), yes I timed it.

If there is absolutely no traffic and I gun it, four minutes. :)

traffic is normally not that bad, it does get a lot worse during 5pm.

you're fortunate to live so close... it takes me about 8-10 mins without traffic and 15-20 with.. thats with shortcuts.

automatic transmission? pansy. :p

no traffic = about 30 min. to san gabriel

with (longest for me) = 1 and a half-ish

To San Gabriel ...

30 minutes without traffic (going back on Sunday night)
90-120 minutes with traffic (going back Friday afternoon)

^^ about the same for me.

If there is absolutely no traffic and I gun it, four minutes.

Sorry to say, but your assumption is wrong. I too am old (at least relative to the vast majority of people on this board) and drive way too much for my own good. On top of that, I'm a motorcyclist and an EMT who has seen many many traffic 'accidents'. Believe me, I know that people are terrible drivers around the US. Perhaps I should rephrase to say that, due to the amount of traffic in LA, you will encounter a hell of a lot more of those crappy drivers per mile than you would most other places.

amen to that :)

Well I have a 91 mustang with a 5 speed that I plan to bring down with me. I might regret that.

where exactly do you plan to park it?
