This is outrageous and puts me at a huge disadvantage. Do you think there is any way around this?
I do not see the huge disadvantage. If you can get into Penn, you will surely get into Northestern even in RD round.
I’m not clear on what is the “advantage” you fear is going to be lost? The only one I can see is if you predict a rejection/deferral from Penn and are hoping for an admit to NE. Is there something I’m missing? Thnx
Yes, that is exactly it. I’m predicting a deferral, and would really like to get into NEU
If you are good enough to even be deferred from Penn ED, you chances of getting into NE are still very good. But yeah of course you cannot be sure. But that is ED for you. It just comes down to whether you want Penn enough to commit ED. If you feel uncomfortable committing then do not.
Then why do you want to apply ED to Penn?
I’m still trying to see the “outrage” here.
Hold on. If you ED Penn, you CAN EA Northeastern. This is ED, not REA/SCEA
Penn became restrictive ED this yesr.
Oops. Just read about that. Sorry!
That is a very strange move
where can i read about it? this wasn’t the case last year when I applied I believe.
You can read it on their website.
They announced this two weeks ago on their website. It is a terrible policy…only restricted early decision college in the US. (Although there are restricted early action schools)
Is all ED restrictive?
No. ED means if you get accepted, you go. So no college has ever made ED restrictive.(You can get out of attending if financial issue).so for other ED Ivy’s you can simultaneously apply to MIT, NEU, Case, Tulane and other private EA schools. Penn is still allowing public EA’s but not private.
With your stats might you get merit at NEU, then maybe you would not want to ED to Penn.
There is no way around the rules. So you will have to choose between applying ED to Penn or EA to Northeastern. Many people have to make similar decisions so no use complaining about something that is out of your control and will not change. Made a choice as to how you want to proceed and move forward along that path.
Although this won’t apply to the OP, @happy1 - if enough people voice legitimate complaints (and they are legitimate), policies could change, no?
@Cue7 I guess you never know, but wouldn’t hold my breath for a change. With an acceptance rate under 10% I expect UPenn will have more than enough people who will apply ED under the current rules without complaining. Penn’s policy does have a number of exceptions already in place to help insure that people won’t be hurt. http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/apply/freshman-admission/early-and-regular-decision
Northeaster’s deadline for scholarship is January 1st, so under current policy, you can’t apply there. Tulane has scholarships that have a november deadline, thus you would be able to apply there EA under the exception of for scholarships
Penn must have had ED applicants who were admitted and failed to enroll after they got into another school EA and probably received merit money. It is always the few who spoil it for the many.
