So...I didn't break in my boots before DOC...

And I leave Friday. Am I screwed?

I wore my boots a few times before my trip, but even then I got horrible blisters and every step was painful (I was on easy hiking). And this was with two pairs of socks and moleskin too. I honestly wish I had just worn my running shoes instead. Even with the big packs, a couple of my trippees wore either sneakers or low-top boots instead. They seemed just fine.

The DOC recommends buying high-top hiking boots so that if you trip while carrying a heavy pack, your ankle won't receive as much of a blow. If I had to pick between the chance of more severe ankle pain and certain blisters, I'd risk the ankle.

If you are not on a hiking trip, I'd say it's definitely fine to wear some more comfy sneakers. If you're on leisurely or easy hiking, still wear the sneakers. I can't say for certain for the other hiking trips though.

So...I'm doing leisurely hiking. Can I wear new sneakers or ones that have really been broken in?

Just wear whichever sneakers are most comfortable. But wear something with structure and support like a new balance running shoe. Avoid casual sneakers like converse. And don't forget to return your boots! I'm sure you can find a much better use for those $100.
