So I didn't get into ED1, Help me decide on ED2.

So this morning I logged on to middlebury's decision site and got the dreaded message that I got deferred. I'm toying with the idea of applying to another school ED2. The current candidates are Bowdoin, Vassar and Hamilton. I could use the CC input on which I should apply ED2 to if i decide to use that option. I've visited all 3 and really liked them all.

Possible Majors:
Political Science
Economics
International Relations

if you need more info about me just post.

Why do you want to go to those schools? An EDII commitment is just as binding as an EDI commitment. Would you be applying because you just want to get it over with and get accepted? Or would you be applying to one of those schools because you really really really want to go there?

My impression is that if you're just toying with applying to one of three schools at this late date, you're not really sure that's where you want to spend four years.

And, having been deferred at Midd, there's still a chance you can get accepted there. Do you want to throw away that possibility forever? BTW, does Midd have EDII, and would you be considered under it?

Do you know the expression, "Marry in haste; repent at leisure"? It means that if you make a serious commitment in a hurry, you'll have a loooooooong time to think about it and, perhaps, regret it.

There's no good reason to apply EDII if you're not sure where to apply!

If Middlebury is still your first choice, and you don't have a clear second choice, don't apply ED II.

yes yes, only apply ED2 if you TRULY ABSOLUTELY want to go there ;)

What are your stats like?

Agreed. If you were deferred, then CALL Middlebury and see if there is anything you can do to supplement your application and strengthen it . The problem now becomes that all the kids deferred or rejected at HYP et al will run for cover to schools like Tufts, Middlebury, UVa, Georgetown, Hamilton, Washington and Lee, etc....WashU...all the usual suspects who scoop up these excellent candidates....so you will have more competition at RD. Not to discourage you. You may very well be accepted RD. But cover your bases.

Do NOT apply somewhere else EDII unless you are willing to walk away from Middlebury completely. Don't emote about this. Be rational and calm and think through your actions. Yes, its painful for now, but it will work out.

Then, make application to some match and safety schools that you LIKE and can see yourself at....and apply RD to them. Yes, you have to wait until April and that is a pain in the neck. But you are NOT alone. TENS OF THOUSANDS are just like you.

We went through this last year...and waited until April..and lo and behold we had an epiphany and accepted an offer from a match school.....and my D is very, very happy there.

Your interests are wonderful and also common..meaning there are LOTS of schools that offer those programs....and are wonderful.

embrace your safety and match schools...they will take you and they may even offer MORE money.

Sorry about the deferral. Middlebury is a special place....but its not the only game in town. Yes, its language school is amazing...but those languages are taught at many, many schools.

Go where you will be happiest....and fit in the best. Go visit some more schools and ask yourself, "is this me? are people like me? are they friendly and warm? are they happy and having fun...or are they stressed and frenetic?"

Too many kids think they will only be happy and successful at one particular school.....but they fail to keep an arm's length emotional distance..and when bad news comes..they are crushed....and then start making more bad decisions in anger or frustration. Dont do that. Be calm, rational and reasonable. Take a day or two to blow off your frustration..that is normal. Then get to work on new applications and like I said, embrace your match and safety schools. Focus on two schools you REALLY like....not based on prestige but based on who you are as a person, your interests, culture, personality etc. You too will have an Epiphany as we did last April. Its like the parting of the Nile.

Believe me. Good luck.
