So I failed....

I was so sure I would get a C in my transferable college algebra class, but I GOT A D.

I am hoping to transfer to UCLA in the fall as an English major... So what do I do now? Retake the class? Is it likely they will still accept me if I retake it, since it wasn't a major prereq?

Should I update my application and put the D in now, or would I be more likely to still be accepted if I put it in later? Should I contact them soon? Do I tell them the reason why (which is kind of a valid reason... I was sick with the flu/fever/throwing up the entire week before the final).

Thanks a lot for your help. As you can imagine today has been a really tear-filled-sick-to-the-stomach type of day since I found out.

I'm so sorry to hear that. :[
Well, although Algebra is not a pre-req for an English major that D will hurt your GPA. Calculating that grade in, what is your GPA now? Have you applied to other schools?
Be honest and update your application accurately with what you have. I don't think having the flu is a valid excuse for UCLA (as i'm sure they get those kind of appeals all the time).

The sooner you update your app with the D, the better. Do it now and don't wait. It's probably not as bad if your GPA doesn't fall below a 3.0.

I also found this:

You should report the D as soon as possible. Everyone waits until the last minute to report the D and that creates a backlog that aggravates the admissions officers. Report it now and attach an explanation (well written, tragic and believable) and hope for the best.

Send a one page formal letter to each campus you applied to stating in which class you received a D and the reason for receiving the D. Include whatever identification information that is required by each campus (should be on their web sites). If you had a medical or family problem, describe in detail how that impacted your school schedule (e.g. extended absence). Otherwise state plainly what went wrong, avoid blaming others for your failure. Then keep your fingers crossed.

Thank you guys soooooo much! My GPA is a 3.65 with the D. Tomorrow I am meeting with my math professor to discuss the grade and look over the final, so cross your fingers for me...

Thanks very much everyone!

Maybe the professor will accept an incomplete for now and you can redo the final later?

Doesn't D = No Pass ?

Ya you should do it as soon as possible. And then CALL THEM as soon as possible and let them know what happened and explain your case of what happened... etc. It will really help.

Thanks so much everyone, I appreciate it. Met with the math teacher today and turns out that I was just 10 points away from a C grade, 10 pts out of 700 and he will not budge.

So I'm working on the letter and have added the class for spring.

Would it look much better if I received a A in the class, or does it not really matter as long as I pass?

Edward- Does the letter really have to be one full page?

Thank you!

Ouch, that's too bad he wouldn't change his mind, chumpree. I remember back in High School when I was one point away from an A (1 out of 900 points) in geometry, and the teacher still would not raise my grade to an A, if that's any consolation.
