So I got a D in Bio...

For some reason, I just didn't get AP Bio and have now wound up with a D as my first semester junior year final grade. The D is quite an anomaly on my transcript: all my other grades this semester are A's (all except one AP/Honors classes) and I've only gotten two B's so far in high school (everything else being A's as well). My counselor told me I can re-take the class over the summer at a community college and whatever grade I get there will replace my D in my GPA, but colleges will still see that the first time I took the class I received a D. Assuming I end up with an A in the comm. college course, is getting a D the first time around still a black mark enough to kill any chance I have at schools like Northwestern, UC Berkeley and UCLA? I've worked really hard these past three years and have gotten good grades and got a 2260 SAT score, so to see all my effort dissipate because of the one bad decision of taking this class seems unfair. Any thoughts?

It hurts. But one grade won't kill you, esp. if you aren't a science major kid, which it sounds like you aren't. You can't do anything about it anyway so no use worrying.

i would definitely replace the grade. i'm doing the same thing with my math analysis grade because, due to bad circumstances, i got a C in it last year. look at it this way. even if you can't erase the grade from your record, colleges will still be glad that you tried it again, especially if you make an A next time around. they don't want you to just quit and leave the grade how it is. also, if you replace the grade, you can still save your GPA and class rank. the colleges probably look more closely at those numbers than at individual grades anyways. so, you'll probably still get into a great college. good luck =)
