I have gotten this far. I have a couple questions.

What do I actually do? When I show up will it be in his lab where I do the research.

What is the mentor supposed to do?

Other than to put it on my college app why would I need a mentor or his lab(?).

Should I get him to write me a college rec? I am as rising junior. If not how do I get proof that he was my mentor.

Pretty much I am totally lost. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could answer these questions.

Is it something you do over the summer, or did you call the professor and just ask him/her? If it’s a summer program then I don’t think you have to worry…

I emailed the professor.

Hmmm…I’m not sure. If you emailed him/her about your research, do you think he will let you use his or her lab? You could email and ask.

All he said was he could be my mentor. I dont know what he means by that.

So you need to clarify that. What type of help do you want from him?
Do you want to work in his lab? Do you want him to teach you how to do certain things for your research project?

You will need to think about what you want from him and find out what he is willing to offer you in terms of time and resources. Some of this can be done on email but a meeting would be very useful.

What kind of research are you interested in doing?

I havnt thought of what type yet. I just know i want to do research. Im just completely lost. Im sorry.

So you will need to contact him and ask him what you might be able to do in his lab. Think about how many hours/days you want to spend on research. Tell him what skills or classes you already have (?classes that are relevant to his research). And then see what he proposes. I don’t think you’re lost. You just need information.

Thank you milkweed. You a life saver!
