So I got my PSAT scores today and I'm confused. What's the new scoring scale?

I’m new here, so sorry I’m posting this in the wrong spot. I’m trying to get a national merit scholarship, and I thought the new PSAT test was on a scale of 1600. However, I’ve read on a few sites that the PSAT is out of 1520, and the SAT is out of 1600. Which is it?

Also, I got a 1500(which is better than I did on practice tests), but I live in California, which tends to have a very high national merit cutoff(I think it was around 220 on the old test). Does anyone have an idea of what my chances are? If it’s out of 1520, I’m guessing I’m in, but if it’s out of 1600, I’m not so sure.

Thanks in advance.

It’s 1520, but it’s the selection index score that is used for NM (which is out of 228) and that might differ a little depending upon whether you were stronger in Math or the other areas, I can’t imagine that a 1500 won’t be good enough though.

Thanks @higheredrocks, that answers my question.

@higheredrocks Why does a higher math score matter?

At a 1500 / 1520, higher math score is irrelevant because he’s guaranteed NMSF.

In general, however, the selection index is based on reading score + writing score + math. It’s possible for two people with the same score out of 1520 to have wildly different selection indexes
