She likes me as a student and has comented that my writing is superb and inciteful. She even offered to fill out a letter of recomendation for me, but the problem is that she doesn't give As. She has told me this. How much would it hurt my application (I'm applying to harvard, Mit, Duke, and some safeties) if I were to get one B in an AP class in senior year? My overall gpa isn't great (it is explained by a note, but I did mess up my freshman year with straight Bs) . I can provide more info if needed, thanks in advance.

You have a great advocate for you, and a potentially strong recommendation letter. What more are you looking for? The person reading the recommendation letter is not planning to correlate what the letter says and the grade received in one of your courses. Nor is a “B” in an AP course a “bad” grade. It all depends on the course, the school, the grading policy, etc. Grade variations across schools are normal and admission committees take them into account.

My problem is that for schools such as Harvard, Duke, and MIT a B, especially in my senior year, is bad. Not to mention that this is not my first B.
