Well, I posted in the thread "What instrument do YOU play" that one day I would want to learn the drums, probably in college or something like that. But, today, out on a whim, I decided that there's no time better than the present. So I went out to my local music store and picked up a cheap drum pad and some sticks, as well as two instructional VHS tapes and a DVD. I also got a metronome with no battery. But now I have no idea how to begin.

This thread goes out to all drummers who know what they're doing: If all I have is a pad, what do I do to improve at the drums? What kind of exercises, etc do I do? Basically any advice at all for an eager drummer is much appreciated.

Good way to start (I've been drumming for 8 years and started out the same way). Get yourself a beginning instruction book and just start going through it...that should prove enough work to get started. Just playing around on it can be good too. I'll sit down with my practice pad and mess around for hours, and that sometimes is my best practice session of the week.

are you looking into marching drums, or drum set?
even if it's set, rudimental stuff carries over, and it warms up/works up your hands well.

arrrgh I have no idea how to explain anything through text... pretty much what that dude said, get a book of exercises and play through it. and use the met, always!
