So I just met with my CC counselor...

Useless! How is it that I know more about UC transfer admission than he does?! College Confidential, you guys are my counselors. :)

Did you specifically get a UC/TAG counselor? That might be why. Lol

2013~ counselor’s jobs suddenly replaced by assist.org

so is the general consensus that it’s necessary to meet with a cc counselor when you plan to transfer or not? it seems that many people think they don’t give out the right information…is it better to just do your own independent research and contact admissions at the uni where you want to transfer with any questions, and then do the whole application process yourself?

im not doing tag or igetc or anything…

We have a mandatory College Counseling class for new CC students at my CC that basically covers CC degree reqs and UC/CSU transfer reqs. The counselor explained how to make an educational plan for the next couple terms and introduced the class to the assist website. By time I started that required class, I had mapped out my entire CC schedule through transfer (with all the proper prereqs and CSUGE/IGETC areas covered) and had visited the assist website like a million times.

It was pretty much a waste of time, and to be honest, the counselor was confusing students more than he was helping them (always contradicting information that students find on assist, csu or uc websites, etc and not being very clear about some important things).

Don’t counselors have to sign your TAG for specific UC’s? I think Santa Cruz requires a counselor to sign the TAG.

Right, but is it a requirement to meet them (if you’re not doing tag or anything like that)

No, I think you can go ahead and do all the applications yourself.

This completely varies cc to cc. The counselors and specifically the transfer counselors at my cc (Napa Valley College) were excellent. Always available by appointment, going over different paths (IGETC, CSU’s, Tag,etc) and just for general questions. Lots of transfer workshops and events and even a Transfer celebration at the end of the year. We even had reps from UC Berkeley and UC Davis come to our cc regularly and you could easily set up appointments with them. I am sorry so many other cc’s are lacking in this area. Mine were very helpful. I would continue to try setting up with your counselors as just like many other things, some are better than others.

I’m dong a TAG workshop next Thursday. Hope it goes well.

@theresistance - As far as I know, UC Davis requires counselor approval. I’m not sure about the others, but UCSB does not require any kind of approval (I emailed them and specifically asked).
