So I might explode.....

Okay well im kind of mad about the whole application process on my side. A girl who goes to my school is applying to the same top tier private university that im applying to here in my state. She's currently ranked 12th in our class but the issue is that she cheated pretty much her whole entire high school career. She would skip classes regularly whenever there was a quiz and/or test in that class and would just make up that quiz/test another day and she would find out from other students what was on that quiz/test/daily assignment and study for it accordingly. It seems unfair and cheating to me because I, as a hard working student, worked just as hard and did the SAME assignments ON TIME without ANY EXTRA studying time. If i had extra studying time than her, i would probably be ranked higher than her. Im currently ranked 17th (not that far behind her) but i feel that her rank might have an edge over me in the admission to this top tier college. She's also applying to this top tier private university just for "names sake" and just so she can "show off" to all her buddies that she is smart when really she is not. Is there anyway that this ranking difference and her better grades could get her into this university over me, who has around the same grades, better recs/essay/ec's, and decent ACT/SAT scores?

well, recs/essays/ecs count for a huge portion. 12 and 17 are fairly close (what is the college and what is the total class size?), so I mean the rest of the application is fairly important. You can't control what others do, just work hard and do YOUR best and you will do fine.

uh college is Rice University- acceptance rate is like ~28%. Out of 8,000 applicants in 2011 they accepted around ~2,500

^how about your senior class size. Personally I don't think it will be a big deal, unless there are like 20 people in your class so you are at the bottom of your class, but I mean at my HS the #2 ranked person got into the State Uni and some other matches, but #8 go into U Penn ED, so the rest of the app makes a huge difference.

Given such a low acceptance rate, the effect that your classmate could have on your application is negligible. Do your best on your own application and stop worrying about your classmate.

^ thanks!
my class is 400 by the way.
