So I might fail my first semester at UCB...

So I recently got caught cheating in Bio 1A for copying a lab report. Yes, I know it was bad to do this, and it was a stupid mistake; I'm laughing right now at my own stupidity. What are the punishments for academic dishonesty? Will I get expelled? Will my future job prospects be wrecked?

I am fleetingly acquainted with a couple people in one of my classes this semester who got busted for cheating in the mid-terms. As far as I know they will get a big fat zero for the MT, but as it only accounts for a fifth of their grade, they still have a shot at getting a passing C. Though I suppose getting such a big part of your grade basically nuked must be demoralizing.

That said, even if you get an F for that class, as long as you get solid B’s or better in your other classes you should still clear the 2.0 GPA average you need to maintain. If you don’t you’ll be put on probation. That means you have to sort out that problem by the next semester, i.e. raising your GPA above 2.0. But these are really extreme scenarios…

You will not be expelled for your first offense, certainly not if it’s just a lab report and not even an exam or final. Just make sure you never do it again (or get caught) as they take a much dimmer view of repeat offenders. Obviously no, thus far it will not wreck your job prospects.

I’ve heard if you get a D or F in a class, that you can retake it and although it remains visually on your transcript, the retake grade is the one incorporated into your GPA. I’m not sure if that’s true or not though.

One person cheated my year. He wrote an apology letter, and failed the class. Took it again next semester.

Do not anger the Bio 1A professors. They teach a lot of the other bio classes.

BuBBLES’s suggestion is pretty good. Do that.

yes do what bubbles said

You might just get a 0 on the assignment, or you might get an F in the class depending on what it’s worth. Some classes give you a warning (there was cheating going on in two of the classes I took, and the cheaters were warned the first time but not penalized).

I don’t think it will go beyond that for a first offense.

Hopefully you are feeling better after reading everyone’s comments. Lets hope for the best!
