okay so basically the title says it all. i just want some inputs. im not going to write a huge list of everything i've done in my life but sum it up in couple sentences. i have 3.2 GPA right now, i've taken mostly all honors and APs my school offers, i suck at math and science which is why my grade is so low, absolutely love history and political science, i have A LOT of extra curriculars, really good leadership, super involved at school, have good volunteer stuff and im going to have 2 great recommendations for sure. (already took care of that with the teachers). SAT is 2000. but taking it again in october. what else. SAT II history 700, and SAT II language 800. ummmm taking Math IIC or IC in november.

these are some of the schools im interested in, now, please make use of your college admissions chance geniuses and help me out!

U of Wisconsin-Madison
George Mason
UNC-Chapel Hill
Pepperdine
Syracuse
Villanova
Michigan State
U of Michigan
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz
UC Irvine
Boston U
Arizona State
U of Arizona

i live in california. but out of the UC's, i'd want to go to UCSB, and yes, i realize a lot of the schools i listed are difficult schools to get into. its such a bummer because my GPA does not reflect my intelligence at all...
what kind of back up schools? i have like two months to finish my apps and i need to make right decisions. thanks!

dude don't listen to this crap about the gpa being a super limiting factor. i got into great schools..technical schools like cal tech, and others like penn and rice and michigan with an UW of 3.37. balancing this, i had a 1600 and other top SAT II scores. so if you go about showing them that you are a very intellectual person and have a deep passion, they will factor those in. i would recommend OWNING this fall semester and gunning for a 2250+ on this SAT. Good luck and don't mind the detractors. what are your AP scores. i have my current GPA and all that righ tnow, but i have 13 AP scores of 5. (note, see my other posts. i'm reapplying to some schools. i am a senior this year). you need to have offsetting factors basically-ACADEMIC offsetting factors

Pepperdine - reach
UC Santa Barbara - slight reach (def not impossible since instate b/c friend with 3.4 got in, but I think his SATs were stand out)
UC Santa Cruz - safety
UC Irvine - match
Boston U - super reach
Arizona State - safety
U of Arizona - super match/ safety

wowwww thanks for all the tips everyone. yeah i'm goin to be a senior this year, i've gotten one 4 and two 5's on my AP tests last year. and i am definitely going to OWN my SAT's and my senior fall grades.

do you think that it will be a good choice to apply early decision? given my grade and all that stuff.

oh also... what about my geographic factor. i live in a very affluent city in Orange County, my parents are both college graduates, (although from another country), and i have absolutely no financial problems. will that affect my chances at out of state schools?

and i am definitely planning on dominating my senior year classessss

so you partied hardy most of high school, did poorly, an d expect to suddenly be in league with people who worked their butts off and sacrificed fun?

UCSB - getting ridicolously competitive, reach. but i think this school would fit you just perfectly.

UC irvine - match
ucsc - match
pepperdine - reach, and dont expect to party here

eh actually no... i didn't party. haha. my bad grades are result of me dropping out of three AP & Honors classes in middle of the semester because i had serious personal problems with couple of my teachers during 10th and 11th grade...it's called mutual hatred. so i would have failed the classes anyway so i decided to drop the classes and not deal with them anymore. but i took the classes over at community colleges and summer school and all that goodness.

but yeah.... haha fortunately i've been able to stay away from the crazy orange county party scene

hm i just read what i wrote and i made it sound like i dropped those classes for selfish reasons. true, but it was a decision that i made with my counselor that it was in my best interest to take alternative courses. okay so thats that.

also...as i've said before, i know that my GPA is pretty low.. okay. really low. but my GPA does not reflect my intelligence and my potential.

ummm extra curriculars. okay honestly i am swamped with my AP assignments that i want to get done before this weekend) so i can't list everything in detail but i appreciate how everyone wants to help out so here is the best i can do in like 10 minutes! THANK you!!!!

okay i seriously can't remember everything i've done. i have it all written down somewhere but i can't write it all down.

I suspect that UNC and UMich are out of reach with your GPA. I think you have a shot at BU and Pepperdine because your folks will be able to pay full freight (make sure you indicate that you are not requesting finaid on your application).

Other LAC's with a profile resembling George Mason (or even a bit more competitive) might be worth looking at - more so than some of the OOS state schools. What majors are you interested in? Are you male or female? Are any states or regions of the country off-limits?

one possibility ... if you think you're going to have a great GPA as a senior you might want to consider a gap year ... then when you apply your GPA would be higher and your transcript will show the positive trend (A 4.0 as a senior could get you up to the 3.4-3.5 range ... this is ignoring any GPA kickers for AP)

Is that your UC GPA or just the weighted GPA that shows on your high school transcript? It is impossible to discuss your chances at the UC's without your UC GPA. There is also much more information I would need about other areas than your grades and test scores in order to give you a realistic assessment of your chances at the other schools. I have PM'd you with those questions so we can discuss this privately.

I think your SAT DOES compensate. Your GPA is average (no matter who says otherwise---B students are average)...it's not like you have a 1.5 UW and a 2400.

Anyways, regardless of how great your GPA is, the UCs would be pretty big reaches.

George Mason looks like a match/safe match. Syracuse is a maybe.

eh...talked to my guidance counselor and she told me that i should apply to university of arizona right now because they have rolling admission. and i have a really good chance of getting in. at least thats what she said. she also told me not to do early decisions so that i can show my 1st semester senior year grades.

Definately do the University of Arizona app promptly: rolling app chances are better earlier in the season. You will also feel much better having an acceptance under your belt early in the season.

I also agree about the ED - unless your GPA is close to being OK for the ED school.
