I visited Emory today, and I was not impressed at all with Atlanta.......It seemed really "ghetto" EVERYWHERE....I went to downtown, and it was scary at night, people walking around with grills in their teeth and durags....In South Atlanta, I thought I heard gunshots at 12 at night...In north atlanta, random people with baggy clothes were walking around with dark shaded glasses, and gang tattoos on their arms( At least, I thought they looked like gang tattoos).......In the surburbs 30-40 minutes away, I saw the same thing, muscle cars with dark shades, and rims, and people walking around in a group, as if they were in a gang, they were all wearing the same color clothes........Atlanta is making me rethink Emory.......Atlanta doesn't seem safe at all, even when compared to L.A., Detroit, and Miami......lol, I'd feel safer at Johns Hopkins, because there are some "safe" places to go to in Balimore, even if most of the city is ghetto....

If I do go to Emory, I probably won't leave the campus or Druid Hills(parts of Druid Hills had people that looked like gangbangers) at all.....

Emory's campus was okay, it wasn't too big....The kids at Emory seemed to be isolated and seemed to hang out with only people in their clique....The cliques were obvious because the kids seemed to fit their clique's sterotype well....

^^^^ More reasons for me not to go to Emory......Could Atlanta be the reason for Emory's low yeild?

that was my impression too. druid hills looks quite nice but there are crackheads in the streets 3 blocks in the other direction. i drove to georgia and personally did not like the looks of much of the state of georgia. heard that emory is about 30% jewish and 30% asian. i guess that makes me a minority there. i don’t want to go to a school with a lot of cliques. i am going to boston and i love that city. emory’s campus itself looked beautiful but area kind of eh???

All I can say is that in 3 years I have never felt unsafe at Emory or in the surrounding area. Atlanta is a great city and certainly not a reason not to attend Emory. It is no less safe than any of the major cities you’ve mentioned. I also would think twice before assuming that seeing muscle cars and rims makes people “ghetto” (whatever that might mean). While some parts of Atlanta are not great to go in to in the middle of the night, the majority of it is like any major city - be smart and there is no need to worry.
Given the fact that you visited during the summer and almost all of the students have gone home, I think it’s a really bad idea to make judgements about the student body from your visit.

I am asian, and in my high school, I am the only minority kid around, its not bad at all, because the kids in my school are cool…My town isn’t a redneck town, but a surburb, where the average salary is 200,000, so its very safe, very tolerant and very insulated…Its the perfect place to live, because there are no hicks, and no ghetto people for miles…a very sharp contrast to Atlanta and Georgia…

I’m sorry if this sounds harsh but you need to broaden your horizons and be open to the possibility that everyone who is different from you (or non-wealthy, non-majority) is bad. Your view of Atlanta and Georgia appears to be either misinformed or ignorant (even offensive). I suggest you be more open minded to a place unlike your own suburb. You might gain an appreciation for things that are different; however, this does not mean that your perception of Atlanta, Emory, or the surrounding is close to the popular opinion of those who go to school at Emory.

You’ll be fine. =] Remember, 9 out of 10 people like gangbangs!

Though, you do need to realize that people who look “ghetto” aren’t bad. It’s just a look or lifestyle.

I think most people hang out in cliques because they’re not comfortable being around others different than them. It’s the same reason why many people wear brand name clothing. I tend to be a self-isolationist, because I’d rather be alone than be stereotyped in different groups. But I’ll be friends with you!

I’m also a white male atheist from a very wealthy suburb (Arlington, VA) and I didn’t think Atlanta was too bad. I looove the neighborhood around Emory, but I’ll agree that outside of it is pretty ghetto. At least there is stuff around Emory’s Atlanta campus, there’s pretty much nothing around Oxford… I think that I would feel the same way as you if I still lived in Arlington, but after moving to a working class place in Oregon (2 years ago), poorer placed don’t seem too bad. Just carry some self protection; I always carry a telescopic baton on me. I don’t think I would ever need it, but it’s nice to feel that I can protect myself if need be.

As a semi-Atlanta native, I would agree that this is not the safest place on Earth. The downtown area is VERY sketchy, there are just random people sitting around on the streets and talking to you as you walk by. I think last month three gunmen mugged and kidnapped two students, one from Georgia Tech and one from GSU. So it’s pretty scary. But y’know, it could happen anywhere. I wouldn’t sweat it.

this is redic…maybe cause coming from new jersey (sandwiched between NYC and philly, murder capitol of US) i am more comfortable with so-called “ghetto” atmosphere. i honesty did not notice this feeling whe i visited emory in march. The people were really friendly everywhere we went and the city was cleaner, greener, and had some nice shopping and eating areas compared to philly and nyc. not to mention emory’s beautiful suburban campus that makesd you feel like your home. lots of good’ol southern hospitality!!!

Yes Atlanta does have a lot of crime but it is not as bad as say Newark or Chicago…i don’t know…correct me if i’m wrong

I didn’t get the same vibe as you got when I visited Emory. Didn’t see any gangbangers or whatever you call them, but that’s because Emory is in tonied Druid Hills.
I go to the Smyrna/Cobb area much more often and I have to say that place is hell scarier than where Emory’ at

^^^ lol, I used to live in Chicago, but that was a long time ago…not used to the city anymore…Cipers is what you said true?..Because GT and GSU are pretty good schools, and that is some scary shiiiitttt…

But missy, the thing about Newark is, if you go 30 minutes away from it, its not bad, the suburbs of Newark are VERYY Nice…Atlanta’s suburbs, at least the ones I visited didn’t seem that great …I went to some place called McDoungoh, which is 30-40 minutes from Atlanta…

Basically these 3 men dragged the guy into a car, drove him around and took money from his ATM account. But remember that GSU doesn’t have much of a campus, it’s just a bunch of buildings sprawled around downtown.

like any city on earth, atlanta has its good parts and its more sketchy parts, and its good suburbs and bad suburbs.
the area where i live, which is like 10 miles from emory, is pretty safe. this one time we accidentally left our door unlocked (cuz our lock was very messed up) and nothing happened.
but yea, if you go to places like stone mountain (the dekalb part) and all the other places down there. it can be pretty scary

i visited Emory in April and i didn’t like it! in the first place i was very interested in going there and i was very sad that it was located in a bad city( it looked very scary to me!) and i was very disappointed with the campus! finally after a lots of thoughts i chose another college. But of course it’s subjective. it’s just my own opinion.

Atlanta is an amazing city - just stay out of the sketch parts (like in any city) & you’ll be fine. Besides, Emory is really safe - they have their own officers (as do many other schools, I’m sure) who are very nice, reliable & good at their jobs. Emory is also in a more neighborhood-like area, so don’t worry about midnight gunshots… The best part about Atlanta is that it’s such a melting pot for different styles & cultures - it’ll definitely open your eyes to different perspectives, something I loved.

Never heard of anyone being scared of durags and baggy clothes before…

Atlanta may not be the place for anyone who is uncomfortable with people different from them. You’d all have a nervous breakdown taking Marta to/from the airport. LOL

May I suggest to those who would be scared to leave their campus in a big city, to find a nice safe suburban school to attend where everyone looks alike and the scariest thing going on is the lunchroom menu.

Seriously, every city has dangerous sections that one learns to avoid and there are killers and muggers in every part of the country. Crime is an unfortunate part of human life. You can live in fear and hide from society or you can use common sense and get on with living life.

I realize this is a ■■■■■ thread which is best ignored; But it made me spew coke on my monitor I laughed so hard at the fear of “grills in their teeth and durags”.

Lions and tigers and bears… oh my

Durags and baggies and tats… oh my!!

:)

Atlanta is an amazing city, with amazing people.

Hilarious thread by a poster who clearly has never been to any major American city or if s/he has, s/he has not stepped out of his/her hotel room.
