So I was waitlisted at the U of Minnesota...

which is my home state. And I'm, well, completely crushed. To put it very, very lightly. I put my scores online, and all the predictors said I had a sure chance of getting in...Alas, they had failed me.

I mean, I understand why I didn't. With my 3.1-3.2 GPA, what school would take me? Thank God I have a 2300 SAT, though, which I thought would balance out my horrid GPA. Not to mention my community involvement and extracurriculars and AP test scores and astonishingly hard course load...

But nothing didn't work.

So now I'm very sad, very distraught, and I feel utterly hopeless for my collegiate future. U of M was the lowest school I applied to...the others were NYU, Brown (HA HA HA), UChicago, Boston University, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC Davis.

Is there ANY chance I could get in one of the ones I listed above? Is all hope lost?

:(

Here are some stats, I suppose...

GPA: 3.1-3.2 (I don't remember......heh)
SAT: 2300
ACT: 33
APs: Psychology, Calc AB = 5
-Calc BC, Music Theory, Environmental Science, Comparative Politics, Statistics: 4
-Biology, Chinese, Micro, Physics B: 3
-Euro, Art History, Macro, English Lit, English Lang: this year's course

Schedule: I have literally taken the hardest classes possible. Which is why my grades are so dismal. I took AP Music Theory in 8th grade. AP Statistics in 9th. AP Biology in 10th. Like...literally, the hardest classes. Which, you know, in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have.

Extracurriculars:
-job as Elf in mall during Christmas (12)
-Science Olympiad (10-12), co-president, 2nd place at regionals, probably win something at state, designed logos and shirts for all three years
-Asian Club (9-12), Vice President
-SEGO (9-12), logoist
-Freelance artist (I draw a lot of shirts/posters for schools and clubs and bands and events and I sell them)
-Piano Accompanist (I've accompanied friends and strangers on piano for concerts, auditions, performances, etc.)
-CTD Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins (summer of 10)
-CTY Biology at Northwestern (summer of 9)
-NYLF on Medicine at UC Berkeley (summer of 11)
-Spanish host family (summer of 12)
-Bravo! Music Camp (summer before 9...lol that counts, right?)
-Piano (my whole life)
-Hospital Volunteer (10-12), accrued about...400 hours. or less. Or more. I have no idea.
-Pit Orchestra Lead Pianist both years (11-12)
-Gay Straight Alliance (9-12) Treasurer
-Jazz Band pianist (12)
-Intramural, Co-Ed, and Varsity Ultimate Frisbee (11-12)

Awards:
-2nd Place Regionals for Science Olympiad
-AP Scholar with Honor and Distinction
-lots of Piano awards
-designed senior shirt for whole school (800 kids!)
-published poems and art in school lit magazine
-art and stories and poems published in online lit magazine
-competing to have art chosen for next year's planner (too bad I won't be there!)

Essays: I love writing...I think they were pretty good, especially for UChicago. I was very proud of my essay, despite its exorbitant length.

Recs: I think...one of them was very very good, and the other was just ok.

um...so yeah! Thank you everyone. I know this is kind of pointless, since I've already applied, but I just want to know if I need to plan on applying else where...like...THE HORROR...a community college. Holy god. That would be horrible.

Thanks!

aaaaaanyone? :)

You’ll get in to UofM despite the waitlist. They will take a closer look, and you will get in, the thing is you raise a red flag at some of these prestigious schools because of your GPA. For some reason, I wouldn’t be surprised if UChicago accepts you. They seem to like smart people, and you definitely are. You just need to put in the work.

Brown, UChicago, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and UCB are going to be really difficult.

I do, however, think that you stand a fair chance at NYU and UC Davis, and I think that you can probably assume you’ll get in to BU.

thanks guys. UChicago and Brown are my top top top top choices…if I got into either of those, I’d be so, so incredibly happy.

I also submitted an art supplement, and I took two Sat II’s: Biology (730) and Chemistry (670). Kind of scrappy too.

Would those help at all?

And what, if anything, can I do to increase my chances at this point?

this is so needy and desperate but I NEED ASSURANCE or another course of action i can take!! :(

anyone??? I could really use some advice here!

can anyone help?

It was probably your GPA. Everything else is fantastic.

I think it was the GPA, but honestly, I’m dumbfounded about your waitlisting. I have eerily similar stats (3.2, 30 ACT) and am an Out of state student, yet I was accepted into the College of Liberal Arts. It could have been that you applied for a highly coveted spot in a specialized program (Chemical Engineering at the College of Science and Engineering maybe) and they had to choose between a 3.2 and 2300 or a 3.7 and 2100. But if you ask me, you should have gotten in.

As for the predictions, the only colleges I see a problem with getting into are UChicago, Brown and UCB. All others are definitely a possibility, and I’m almost positive you’ll get in to BU.

Chance me back?

Wait-listed does not mean rejected… i am sure you will get into the college you want… You stats are pretty great … so don’t worry…

I don’t even know what to do anymore. Does anyone know of ANYTHING I can do to increase my chances at any of these schools? Like awards, competitions…etc.

Also, I applied to PLME (8 year medicine) at Brown…will that help? haha.

But seriously, any advice for UChicago or Brown or NYU? Those are my top top top choices!

And I did an art supplement too, so, yeah.

I’ve been told that UChicago places a lot of emphasis on the essay.
Due to your SAT Score, if you essay(s) for UChicago were simply fantastic, you could have quite a shot. : ]

My essay for UChicago was…quite good, if I’m to remain modest here. But I’ve looked through the statistics of incoming students, and though many had GPA’s between 3.4-3.5, I didn’t see anyone who had something close to 3.0…

…so my chances remain close to nil :(

Well you never know, keep positive!
Worst case scenario you go a community college for a year, get awesome marks and transfer the next year! Don’t worry too much, even if you aren’t happy with your results this year, everything will work out. :)

noooooooononono i would die if I had to go to community college. I would literally die.

are you saying my chances are absolutely NIL for ANY of the colleges I applied to??

D:

It was definitely your GPA. Admissions officers hate seeing high test scores with a low GPA, it conveys laziness. (Not at all saying that you are) Don’t worry though, I’m sure a couple of the colleges you applied to will see that you are a passionate person, due to your plethora of EC’s. Best of luck!

You sound so sad and in need of a good long talk over a cup of coffee with your best friend! Keep these things in mind please: 1)you don’t have to go to a community college if you can pay for 4 year college 2)creative and bright students always blossom when they get AWAY from high school and most college admissions officers know this. None of us can assure you that you will get into any of those schools because we don’t have crystal balls, but you are worth more than the college you go to! You are a unique, talented, motivated person who will find a way in this world! Please call your best friend and tell him or her you need to talk, you need support! You’re going to college, you just have to wait it out like everyone else. Deep breaths, and lots of support and you’ll find out soon where!

I am sad :frowning: haha but I suppose in just a few short (very short) weeks we’ll see how this whole debacle turns out…

The main issue here is that I’ve searched everywhere online and there are very, very few people who are in the same situation as I am. So, I don’t actually know what my chances are for any of these schools, and no one else does either.

That’s why I keep updating this post, hoping that someone, SOMEWHERE, can give me a positive outlook.

But thank you, voce. you are very sweet haha

Does anyone know anything about conditional acceptances?
