I was on the Peterson's website, and it encourages common app users to express interest in a given school by emailing or phoning the admissions office to answer questions. And so I figure that I should do this. But then, I ask myself, what should I ask? Practically everything I could possibly want to know is on the website, in the course catalog. It is encouraged to interview and visit, but I am applying to 10 schools, and for some--this is just not plausible. Is it really neccesary to contact the office with some kind of question...will it really bolster my chances that much? If I just send the common app (which is basically what they are asking for, it doesn't say anywhere "make sure you tell us you want to go here by stalking the adcom!") am I lessening my chances for acceptance?

I don't know, just sign up for their mailing lists do well on the PSAT...I can't really say anything else. Plus most top schools don't look at "demonstrated interest"

Yeah I just read an article that was posted on here....ten things not to do in order to gain points with adcoms...it said that attempting to "stalk" the office of admissions is not a very good idea...so, I guess I won't try to brainstorm questions, lol...

Don't ask questions that you can find on the website. Admissions folks have more than enough to do without wading through inane e-mails.

However, that doesn't mean you can't show interest. Most schools visit various geographic areas. You can go to the local programs, or if an admissions rep comes to your high school, arrange to meet. Alumni interviews are often given throughout the country. Unless you're really out in the middle of nowhere, you can generally show your interest to the colleges you want to apply to.
