So if I pass out of Bio 1A/1B, which Upper Div Bio classes satisfy the Med school req

I really don't want to take these if I don't have to especially since I passed out of these with IB credit. Do you guys know which upper div Bio will satisfy the medical school requirements. ARE there other classes that satisfy this requirement.

if u are premed… u can’t use ur AP or IB credit to pass out bio1b/1a…

Yeah… I would say that the large majority of premeds could pass out of those classes with AP/IB credit. However med schools don’t take AP/IB credit.

I think what OP is trying to ask is since med schools usually require ‘one year of biology’, do any upper div bio courses satisfy this requirement, or does it have to be Bio 1A/B?

(Sorry I can’t answer your question by the way… I’m not a pre-med, so I have no idea).

^ thats exactly what I’m asking.

^some medical schools allow you to take upper divs to satisfy the requirements if you used AP/IB (harvard is one of these) to test out of the lower divs but I believe the majority of medical schools “highly recommend” or require that you retake inorganic chem & bio at your college. I don’t you why they do this but I guess they want to make their lives easier when comparing you to other applicants. I’m not pre-med but I used to think about it in high school and that’s when I found all this stuff out.

She did it.

“2) MCB 32 is considered a biology class by many medical schools, so you won’t need the other semester. I also took Bio AP and got a 5 so that counts as a second semester bio class by some med schools. It didn’t bother me that I could not apply to some specific med schools.”

Interesting. If she did MCB 32… I can probably do IB 131/131L and IB 132/132L for credit. I need to confirm this with an advisor or someone who knows about this sort of stuff.

Is this for IB? because I originally thought (and clearly remember being told) that I could use my AP Bio of 5 to pass out of Bio1A/L and Bio1B but I emailed an IB advisor and she said that I could not do that for major prereqs. Does anyone have more information on this?

Med school requirements can be different than a major prereq. Generally, med schools want to see one year of Bio+lab, which can be Bio 1-2 or any upper division bio courses. You may need departmental approval to waive Bio 1 if it is a required prereq. (Most colleges will allow you to AP/IB out of Bio1, but will require a replacement Bio course so as not to reduce the number of courses required in the major.)

IB used to let you use AP credit, but they stopped

Stop trying to go around the system and just take Bio 1A-B

I agree with anon5524485. Bio 1A/L (maybe not so much Bio 1B) is quite useful. I had a strong Bio AP program at my high school but it still does not compare to Bio 1A/L. It is very good foundation for your upper divs!!!

I’ve heard that Bio actually helped a lot of people too. It’s just that I’m going to a cc for a year (financial reasons) and before they said we could use it but now they say we can’t so i’m screwed for upperdivs…

The ib and career councillors tip toed around this question everytime I asked it. They either say, “why skip it?” My answer is so I can avoid getting my gpa slammed, graduate faster, and make time for more important things, like the MCAT and research. However…

The answer is no it does not, unfortunately. Taking upper division biology courses like IB 131 and IB 132 do not fulfill the requirement of Bio 1A-1B for medical school. However, if you want and if you know you’re general biology enough, you can skip biology 1A-1B, take IB 131 and IB 132 and apply to medical school. Just say you intend to take the Biology classes eventually before you matriculate into medical school (either in the last spring you attend cal or the summer before med school starts.). This way, you wont have to stress out about bio 1A since you’re already accepted by that time and you can just merely pass the class to matriculate. I am a 2nd year pre-dental student at Cal and I can tell you that the biology portion of both the MCAT and DAT only require AP Biology knowledge to do well in (trust me, I’m in the Kaplan course and I didn’t even take Bio 1A yet and still did good on the Diagnostic Test).

I’ve been in your shoes before about this biology stuff. And its hard to ask around because 99% will always try to preach instead of answering your question by saying “it will help”. Of course it will help you on the upper divs, but to answer your question, you can skip out of it and proceed to it if you feel like you’re ready. And if the medical school requires it, just take it later. I’m sure that you study really hard and are capable of studying the rudimentary biological concepts that are shown in the MCATs. Good luck

Having taken the MCAT and upper division IB/MCB classes, I would say it is a BAD IDEA to skip bio 1a. If your AP biology foundation is strong (as it should be), you will do well anyway. Bio 1AL will teach you stuff that you will be happy you learned later on. More than that, it teaches you how to think, balance your time, and and survive stressful **** (ie lab practical). Now you may not need any of that… but on the day of my mcat the thought that “at least this is not the bio 1al lab practical” helped to keep me from freaking out more. Just my 2 cents.

take 1a/1al and skip 1b
