I'm being recruited for Princeton athletics, and aiming for a Likely Letter at the end of November. Is there any certain system that coaches use to pick their LL recruits? Or is it just up to the admissions office? Compared to the others I know being recruited at Princeton, my stats are above theirs, I don't even know if that matters, though!

That is true. You might ask for one, but unless he/she gives the authority for one it won’t be happening. In the Ivies, there are very few per team especially in the secondary sports.

I play for a SoCal club team (which I’m assuming your son does as well by your username). The coach told me I was one of his top recruits and would be submitting my application for review along with all of his other top recruits at the end of November. I’m assuming its up to the AO at that point?

He has been to JO’s five years in a row, All-tournament team, 4.25/4.00 GPA, 31 ACT, 770 Math II, 720 Bio-M, lots of extra curriculars. He’s excited Princeton is attracting quality players. Are you going to visit? He is going next week.

vbp- Yes, once his app is submitted, the decision is up to admissions. And yes, your stats certainly do matter. P wants students who are capable of handling the work, and graduating. Good luck.

i know the stats matter, but from what I read in one of those college admissions books—and I think it is true based on our experience with 2 kids being recruited athletes—the presumptions seem different. if the coach wants you, adcom wants to let you in, but you have to make the grade. The potential problem is of having scores that are not good enough to make the grade for getting in, rather than having to have the best scores of any applicant, because most athletes won’t have the best scores of any applicant (even if they are megabrilliant, they would not have top scores of any applicant because they would not have had time to get best scores on all tests and be top of their sport) and if they do have tippy top scores then the coach doesn’t even need to weigh in on your admission and spend his chits on you—adcom wants to let you in and you have to make the cut, but they are not weighing your ACT scores against another kid’s to see whose are best. I also think there is some averaging in the sense that if player #1 on a team has scores/grades/AI that is a little low, it can be balanced by another player’s.
Also, you will know if you are the top recruit for your coach.
Tho–that status can probably change a lot.

Charger–hope your son has good visit. My D is going to visit “her” school too, with her friends who are scoping it out. I think it may be a little odd since she already knows she’s going, but she wants to go.
BTW re questions from others about who (AO?) sends likely letter—my d got a very nice congratulatory transmittal email from someone in admissions office with copies to the coach, counselor etc, and the pdf attached of official (likely) letter addressed to d and signed by dean of admissions

Don’t underestimate the scores of Princeton and Ivy athletes. There are plenty with top scores, even with the time restraints of athletics. Teams are littered with vals and sals. Perhaps not as many in the helmet sports, though.

Thanks, fauve. This was kiddo #3, for whom (and for me) I retired to homeschool for 9-10th grades, so investment on my part has been particularly large. BTW–dd loved “her” school last weekend, already knows older athletes there—queried “How would you meet people if you didn’t play sports?” Now— I will have to regroup and go back to regular work. Sometimes I think I would like to work on college admissions for kids who need help, as in mostly volunteer basis, or work with school district, rather than in my own professional field, we will see. Anyway, thanks for forum.

Can you tell me how many days if was between completed application and likely letter? We’re being told 2 weeks, which would cut it close to other schools ED deadlines (in case the LL does not materialize).

In my case, I’ve already turned in my application (a while ago) and the coach just said that he would be submitting all of his LL candidates in late Nov. I’m sure it varies with each sport, but I don’t think there is a direct correlation between completing your app and finding out when you get a LL

Soccermom2000 and vbbplayer: My d got her all app materials in in late september, and she was told to get them in in September by the coach. But I was also told through the grapevine that the adcom wouid not formally review them (they had seen some of the materials, eg transcripts, in her application before, informally ) til October, that a LL could not come out until Oct, and that in fact that they were busy uploading application materials the week before oct 1 and were not reviewing apps yet. Her LL from Admissions was dated Oct 6th I believe. I’m thinking part of it is the particular coach, his goals, and his relationship with adcom.

Yeah I’m pretty sure it varies with each sport/coach etc. I was just confused my soccermom’s question…I thought she was asking if there was a certain set time period between when you submit your applicant and when you get a LL
