Ok, well at my high school i know this girl whose applying to the same top university (private school) as me. I have worked my butt off all year and studied and have gotten pretty high grades (I'm in all AP/IB). This girl who is in my same grade level is in the same courses as me(AP/IB) but she pretty much cheats. She skips EVERY test and quiz on that day and comes in early the next or in future days to make up the test/quiz. Due to this circumstance, she thus gets higher grades than me and other students in my class. Everyone in my school knows about her cheating and feels this is unfair but none of the administrators and/or teachers at my school can stop her even though they know she is doing this (I don't know why they cant). She is also ranked higher than me and probably has a higher GPA cause of this cheating. My question is, would i have a unfair disadvantage in applying to the university since she has better (cheated) academic stats and cause me to be rejected ?
Thanks!

of course you're at a disadvantage, you have lower grades/rank. you already know that.

Teachers will probably mention it in her recommendations if everyone knows about it. Wouldn't schools take note of the number of days she's been absent/tardy (or maybe she just doesn't go to class . . . )? How does she cheat this way?

I don't think colleges look at that number too much. I mean.. I hope they don't. I have a number of absences this year, but that's because I've been getting sick a lot this year. I'm nowhere near losing credit and all of my teachers know that when I'm out it's because I am genuinely sick. I think there's a lot of people in the same position.

Well, how does she cheat? You're making it sound like she just takes an extra day or two to study, which admittedly isn't as bad as, say, making people give her answers so she could ace the make up exam.

Alex

I guess I see two kinds of cheating in this situation, and I'm not sure which, or if both, is going on. Does she ask other students who've taken the test about what's on the test? Or does she skip just to give herself more time to study? I think the latter, though unfair, is less sleazy than the former.

However, if this is as consistent as you say it is, then her teachers have probably already picked up on it, and her behavior might be mentioned in a rec letter somewhere.

There have been quite a few threads about students applying to the same university from the same high school and whether there is a disadvantage or not. You can do a search for the old threads. Also, while academics are important, there are still other factors involved.

yeah some of her "friends" tell her whats on the test AND she studies on those extra days. Teachers have told us that if she continues, it will come back to haunt her in college.
But oh well..Seriously, if you can't prepare for a test/quiz in the alloted days, your pretty much cheating/getting an advantage over other kids.

It is unfair if this girl is really just working the system to boost her GPA, but since there isn't a lot you can do about it, just be proud that your integrity is intact. It's highly doubtful that she will somehow take a spot that would have otherwise been yours at said university.

Thanks. I feel her attempts to get recommendations from teachers next year is going to fail .

Look, if even the teachers are whispering about this, then her recommendations will probably reflect this. Although, it's always possible that she manages to get along really well with a teacher who's content to turn a blind eye, but instead of focusing on what she does (as infuriating as her behavior is), focus on yourself and doing the best you can do.

And be proud of yourself for not being like her.

she knows how to get ahead. it's not in the most honorable way. but hey, honor wont get you far. hopefully, this will come back to her later.

Though I may be generalizing, almost everyone has done that one time or another. I skip 2-4 times per 9 weeks if I: 1.)have not studied for a quiz or test, 2.)have not finished a project or homework, or 3.) don't feel like going to school. I know I should have studied, but I did not, and I am not going to fail to give other kids in my grade a chance. In High School, you should utalize the idea of missing a few days to get ahead. Besides, compare the outcomes of each senario. A.) Get an A on a test yet get a little behind in homework, or B.) Get a C on the test and have perfect attendance. The logical choice look easy to me.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but I don't think this is cheating, which I do not support.

Yeah, but you don't do it every time there's a test, and you don't have your friends give you exam answers. At least I hope not.

Once in a while I miss a day so I could catch up on studying, too. This is the last chance we have to actually get away with it guys, lol. Utilize it!

Alex

^ Haha, no. I have like 2 tests a week on average, so I can't skip ALL of them, lol. And I have never missed an exam.

I am glad to see someone is on the same page as me.

Your teachers are right about this kind of approach not working too well in college. It shouldn't work in HS, either, but it's probably easier for the school to let her get away with it than to deal with her parents (who, presumably, don't see anything wrong with what she is doing). They (school and parents) are doing her no favors in the long term.

This kinda reminds me of a friend, who stayed home from school on a test day, so he could come back the next Monday when everyone got their tests back so he could copy down the right answers. As his friend and a student who got 100% on the test, he asked me if he could see my test and I reluctantly agreed. -sighs- I don't know why I did, I just didn't think it was a big deal, even though it really really annoys me that he's basically getting a free A on MY knowledge.

There really isn't much you can do about it, but just know that really, it WILL come to bite her in college. You can only cheat for so long.

(Never, ever, ever again... )

It is sad that she might take your spot, and it is unfair... and she is cheating despite what others might think.
But you teachers are right, getting into a top university is only the beginning of the rat race you'll experience at you university.
She will have troubling keeping up, and even more so in the real working world...
She wont have grades...and if she is a day late... to bad.
it'll bite her in the butt, and while I do hate those people who take advantage of the system as people play it honestly... it'll start bad habits, and its not fair. But Life isn't fair, thats why when you have a chance to SLAM some SOB you hate... you should take it ;)

does she really do this for ALL her tests? or just some? i dont really know who this person is but she sounds pretty successful...u can't blame all her success from cheating..give her some credit -_-

Just remember....KARMA!
