I already visited the campus and everything, so the only reason why I would go is to register for classes. Since I kinda live on the east coast, I figured it wasn't worth it to go for one night, so I get to do phase one on July 14th.

BUT
I'm so worried all my classes/lab/discussion sections are going to be full. My phase one classes are CS 61A and Math 53, which I know are required for a lot of students.

Worried but not panic stricken. Likely you will have poor choices as far as lectures and discussion/lab times, but space could still be open in the classes. Both of them still ‘have’ openings if you look at the spring 2009 schedule, meaning they did not fill.

The classes will be available spring semester as well. If you have a basic plan for your major, you can generate a list with alternatives if the prime choices are indeed full, then take the primes the following semester. Some classes are requisites for future courses and are more critical, but generally there is some flexibility in the order in which you take things and the chains of requirements are not that long or intertwined that anyone is toast if they fail to get a class in a particular semester.

I’m also from the east coast and not going to CalSo. I heard from friends that go to UCB that CalSo isn’t worth the trip out there. I guess class space is an issue, but you’ll make due for sure. I haven’t gotten my phase one appointment yet though…when did you get yours?

Oh I didn’t get mine either.
Actually, besides a nasty letter about financial aid and the L&S summer reading book, I haven’t gotten anything in the mail from them.

I know last year they registered on the 14th, so I’m assuming the same goes for this year?

not sure, just that you get the code after the CalSOs have had their shot at the classes. An incestuous relationship that drives CalSO revenue and lowers advising costs by concentrating advising into the few weekends.

Phase I usually ends up being fine even with a late telebears. Heck I didn’t go to Calso and I got the classes I wanted and a pretty nice lab time. Phase II, however tends to be the real ***** because everything tends to be full.

Based on my own experience, everyone gets into 61A (and usually for 53 too). They try to pack as many people as they can into those classes. I guarantee you’ll get into 61A, even if you’re on the waitlist once school starts. 53 you should be able to get into as well; if there are two lectures, you’ll get into one for sure. Getting into the discussion/lab you want is another story though.
