I just don't know what to do. I've been reading a lot of articles regarding University of Florida admissions, and I'm beginning to think I can't get in. What kind of students are they accepting now? I don't have a pristine 4.0 average, so will I have significantly lower chances at admissions? Can a 33 ACT and many regional science and mathematics awards compensate for a lackluster GPA? (my UF GPA weighted is 4.1). Please answer, I just need some solace right now, my mind is traveling a million miles a minute...

Yes, sweetheart, you stand a very fair chance of admission. A 4.1 gpa and a 33 ACT puts you at or above median for the numerical standards. Just make sure your EC's and soft factors are significant and write a good essay. I do not think admissions will take that huge of a jump this year. Some people say it will finally touch 33.3% but I think it will be 35% or so. In the last admissions cycle it was only 37%. Consider the fact that something like 40% (maybe more) of all graduating seniors in the state of florida apply to UF. Not all of them have those kinds of numbers! I was freaking out like you because I thought that the applicants were a self-selecting group of high achievers anyway but when I got back to school in senior year after applying during the summer I found that many "average" students bothered applying and so its mostly students with drastically lower than median numbers and factors that get declined. I dont know anyone from my area that was qualified for admission that got denied, not to say that it never happens, but MOST of the time.

Me personally, I am an average student, however, that did get admission. My numbers were in the lower range but STILL there were people with worse stats than mine who bothered applying. Thats not to say I never stopped worrying, I just worried less when I found that out. I think, in general, the application pool tends to be people large amounts of students who are high students and large amounts that are lower. The lower are just optimistic and the higher have an innate confidence in the fact that they will get in. I think MANY marginal applicants weed themselves out because of how aware they are of the admissions standards and think that most people who apply have amazing stats and they would never get anyway so its not worth it.

CHILL! =)

That meets honors criteria, right? My theory is that if you meet honors criteria and have decent ECs and can write a convincing essay, you're fine. A very small percentage of potential honors students get turned away. Breathe, submit your application, and hope for the best. It will work out.
