So I'm pretty sure I've been rejected from CSULB...

... because I've been calling their admission status line, and it's changed from "Your application has been received" to "An admission decision has been made." I've been reading past discussions and from what I can gather, everyone who's been accepted has immediately heard, "Congratulations, you've been admitted to the such-and-such program for fall 2011" while everyone who's simply heard that "an admission decision has been made" usually gets rejected.

Has anyone been accepted after hearing "an admission decision has been made?" I can't call the office until Monday.

I have to say I'm kinda shocked. I have a 3.7 GPA from the two community colleges I've attended, I've taken honors classes, and I've fulfilled all of the requirements. The thing is, I moved from southern California to the Bay Area last fall. I was enrolled at Fullerton College, and I think if I'd stayed there I would have gotten in, but now I'm at the City College of San Francisco.

I know they favor local students, but it's kind of silly, isn't it? I've heard of high school students getting in with 2.9 GPAs because they live down the street while 4.0 out-of-state students are rejected. Someone from a previous forum got into NYU even though they were rejected from CSULB. Someone else got into Cal Poly SLO.

I got into Cal State Fullerton (with honors) and Sacramento and San Francisco State. I'm still waiting to hear from Berkeley and UC Irvine. I really think I still have a decent shot at them (I have a lot of extracurriculars and volunteering that CSULB didn't consider, and my essay should have been good too). But this is a little unnerving.

Has anyone else heard from CSU Long Beach?

Where you physically live does not determine which CSU is your “local” CSU–rather it is based on the CCC that you earned the majority of your units. Moving had nothing to do with it–count your credits to figure out which is your “local” CSU.

Silly or no, the system set up to favor in-state over OOS is just the way it is. Most states do this and it is supposed to help justify all those your parents paid state taxes. As for the favoring local area admits, it is just the best system that the CSUs could come up with to deal with the mounting pressures.

Good luck!

Weird. The majority of my units were earned at Fullerton College, which I would definitely consider “local” to Long Beach, but maybe not, since we also have CSU Fullerton down there.

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf

I’m not very familiar with the CSUs, but this chart indicates that students with “30 units of coursework from Long Beach City College and/or Orange Coast, Golden West or Coast Community College” are in considered in the local area for CSULB. (And apparently some consider all of CA to be “local”.)

That being said, best of luck! :)

Aha. Well that makes me feel a bit better. And thanks. :-)

If you’re denied by CSULB, I wouldn’t worry about it at all. It’s not fun being rejected, as I was just a few weeks ago, but don’t feel defeated by it if it does happen.

It’s a really tough school to get into with its service area boundaries (like most CSUs). I’ve noticed that many qualified students, even with very high GPAs, are being denied admission mostly due to the fact that they’re not local students. Good luck! Even if you don’t get in, then it’s just a sign that you truly belong somewhere else (somewhere much better, too).

Called this morning-- I was in fact denied. I think we can conclude that the “admission decision has been made” message (when given over the phone at CSULB) does mean a rejection.

So guys. After all that, I DID get in. Turns out they overlooked my math class!

However, when I heard the “admission decision has been made” message, my status was technically denied, till they fixed it. So I’m betting that’s still what it means.

Congratz Melaniedear! That’s good news!

Thank you! <3
