what should i look for? i'll be there all day friday and i just wanted to know if you guys had any advice or tips on what to do. is friday a good day to go? would you recommend a different day? i'll probably be there saturday, too.

school is out of session, so there probably wont be too many students there

sorry i forgot to say when. i'm leaving in a couple weeks.

talk to profs/gsi's in the dept your interested in, explore the beautiful city of berkeley and see what SF has to offer, talk to students, visit the dorms, walk around campus, eat at one of the many ethnic restaurants in berkeley, talk to some bums, and get a feel for the enchanting school/city we call Berkeley

do you think i should make a plan of things to check out, or just go where the wind takes me?

i think you should definately plan on thing to check out, berkeley is a really big campus and theres no way you can check out everything you want in a day if you don't plan ahead on the things and places you're interested in seeing/knowing about =)

have fun!

Eat at a small restaurant in Berkeley. There's definitely some good food to be had in town. Better yet, spend a couple of hours skulking about the city. Berkeley may not be the prettiest town, but it offers tons of entertainment, shopping, and activities.

Or just people watch. That's fun there.

don't forget to do somethign cool, stand in the middle of sproul plaza...right abouts the free speech monument, and take in the whole scene,...it can really blow your mind. definately shell out the $5 to ride to the top of the campanile (if it's a clear day). sit on memorial glade, walk into a lecture, and if ur parent's arent aroudn, and ur staying with a student, hit up a party.

I think the most important place is to tour around campus, dorms, and surrounding area. Get a feel for the surroundings. That helped me a lot when visiting colleges. Anyway, I wouldn't mind showing you around.

$2 for the Campanile.

Yeah, I'd recommend starting off with the morning campus tour, and then hang out with some students. Spend time around Telegraph and Sproul Plaza. Go to a party at night.

Visit The City if you have an extra day.

bluebeard,
let us know something more about what you like and/or are interested in, and then we can recommend restauarants, theatres, music venues etc.

i'm really active and i enjoy doing things outside. i also enjoy cheap food from non-chain restaurants. any good music on campus? i'm considering joining a fraternity. is there a christian or engineering fraternity on campus?

and thanks for all the great responses!

For cheap eats on Telegraph Avenue, my favorites are Cafe Intermezzo (great salads) http://www.menuism.com/restaurants/cafe-intermezzo/2442-telegraph-ave-berkeley-ca
and Slurp Noodle House http://www.slurpnoodlehouse.com/

For music, you may want to check out Larry Blake's, a Berkeley Institution. For cheap music, you can't beat their open mike nights. Some of their shows are all ages. In SF, Slims and The Warfield also have all ages shows. If you go to any of them, you will need to show your id.

salads? c'mon,...SALADS!!!!....you want a good honkin' piece of meat. for that you got ton's of places for great food. the korean bbq places in asian ghetto, LA BURRITA. or best tri-tip in town----> brazil cafe on university.

with the frat's there's a great greek scene. I dunno about xtian frats, but there's a few xtian groups. they're not that big in membership, but they sure are persistent little evangelists (they invite you to free bbq's not telling you what it's for, and when u get there ur faced with a choice of eating for free and listening to prothletyzing (sp?) or not eating for free...)
the heart of the matter is that anything u can dig u can do around berkeley.

I think Friday has somewhat fewer people walking around campus, a higher level of noise in the night (along with Thursday and Saturday), and a general sense of relief from the students compared to most other days. It’s not all that different from Thursday. You’re there when you’re there- hope you like it.

ok so i might be there this monday, which is a holiday. will there be any students walking around?

If you come next monday, most students will have returned from break, but there are no classes so there wont be much activity on campus, besides clubs etc.

Do you mean the Friday that already passed or this coming Friday? School starts on the 16th so this Friday would probably be a better date as you will see more students starting to filter back to Berkeley. I would definitely check out the Asian Food Court on Durant just passed Telegraph. Also check out the cafeterias like Crossroads on Channing and Boditch to see how you like the food. In terms of campus, just walk around and see what you think. Feel free to ask students you see questions because most people are really friendly and helpful. I myself am a Berkeley student so if you have any more questions feel free to shoot me and email or message.

Two words: Yogurt Park.
