So its that time of year when one has to pick! Advise plz :)

Hey everyone after a stressful year of college applications i have gotten replies from most of my universities and now want the community to help me decide what is my best choice. Im going into Biology intending med school later so please take that into perspective

ACCEPTED:
Rutgers University New Brunswick
Northeastern University
Penn State
Syracuse University

WAITLISTED:
Stevens IT
NYU

REJECTION:
John Hopkins
Columbia
Dartmouth
Boston University

The top two choices I’ve been told are between Rutgers and Northeastern. I’m instate rutgers and a full ride (no tuition) while at northeastern I have a relatively mediocre financial aid, but my parents could afford it if its really worth it. So any advice and your opinions would be extremely appreciated. And I’d like to congratulate all Classes of 2020 for getting through our last year of school in one piece

PS. Should I put hope on NYU waitlist, heard their bio program isnt all that either for their expensive cost as well

If your parents can comfortably afford Northeastern, I would visit both schools and see which one would be a better fit for you. I’m in a similar situation like you: I’m a planning to major in biology at either UNC CH or Johns Hopkins. I got a great scholarship for UNC and I’m instate, but I’ve also had to compare the benefits with Johns Hopkins’s benefits. I’ll probably choose UNC because I know that I’ll have an amazing time there, but I’ve been advised by many to at least visit both schools before making a final FINAL decision, so I think that you should also consider visiting both schools first, if you have the time and extra money to do so of course.

Where do you want to go?

Are you in the honors college? Is your scholarship merit or need?

If it is in the honors college and based on merit, pick Rutgers unless you really do not want to go there or money is not important to your family at all.

Also, if you are serious about med school, pick the place where you will get the best grades, again assuming cost is not important. You may need to do some research to figure that out. Research opportunitites may be important but you can always do a summer internship someplace but ask about that as well (perhaps on the pre med thread.)

Run the numbers here, and talk things over with your parents:

Rutgers is a great public university, and offers a much broader selection of programs in the biological sciences than Northeastern does. Unless you know that Northeastern is particularly strong in the specific area of biology that most interests you, Rutgers makes more sense for major in the biological sciences.
