as a bio major. Once I transfer to the UC is there a way to finish in less than 2 years?

My dad just recently found out that I might end up spending 5 years total on undergrad and he was pretty ****ed off. He really wants me to finish everything without needing extra time. I told him that my CC makes it really hard for people to transfer in 2 years as a bio major but he was still mad.

There was no way I could have transferred in 2 years anyway though, not only have I have no finished a lot of my pre-reqs I don't even have my IGETC done yet so I couldn't have even tag'd my way into UCSD. But on the bright side in 3 years I will have literally everything done and once I transfer I'll only have upper division stuff to finish.

So now that brings me to the question of whether I can accelerate through those last 2 years somehow, like if I take summer+winter courses will I be able to finish in less than that?

I would just deal with your Dad and just do your education the way you need too. Almost every college student takes at least 5 years to graduate. The UC’s are a much more intense than CC and I wouldn’t recommend trying to amp it up while you are adjusting.

Another year is not that bad of a thing. 5-10 years down the road you will be glad you did it right and got the most out fo your education rather than rushing through it just because.

If you need to do it in 1 year, I think it can be done though. 16 units is the expected load at most UCs in the quarter system. Only thing is you’ll have to plan carefully and take 2 summer sessions.

105 units at entrance
summer I/II 16 units
fall 16 units
winter 16 units
spring 16 units
*
summer I/II 16 units

= 185

petition in the spring to graduate in the summer and be included in the spring commencement.

You should probably make a sample schedule (or try to find one on UCSD’s website) and use their current schedules now to plan.

a majority of UC bio transfers take more than 4 years to graduate… If you want to finish earlier. You can load up on summer classes after you transfer. They are 5 weeks long and very expensive. But still you get to graduate faster? Its not even worth it.

Usually the only people who finish in 4 years are the students who already knew what they were going to do straight out of high school. I already knew I was going to be a science major when I graduated from high school. I made sure to started on my bio/chem/math on first semester I started community college. And it turned perfectly. I am even well ahead of the majority of my classmates (non-transfers) too since I finished IGETC and physics already. It has been pretty chill so far. Only have to take 12 units a quarter for next two years to graduate with my degree.

I knew I was a bio major going to my CC but it’s just that my school is making it incredibly difficult to transfer.

These two classes: General Biology I and General Biology II

Are broken up into the following at my school:

Core Bio
Invert. Zoology
Vert. Zoology
Botany
Populations bio

Each of those is a separate class and are 4-5 units each. It’s ridiculous.

Now some UC’s, like UCSB require I take all of those except Populations to transfer. But for like UCR they want ALL of those courses. And at my school you need Core bio to take the 4 listed after that, and you can’t take Invert+Vert at the same time, and Botany is only offered in 1 semester, same with Populations. So yeah it’s a total *****.

Also I still haven’t finished Calc and some elective classes. It was all out of my control though, I messed up in 1st year by taking Genetics (a class that is worthless for transferring purposes) instead of Core Bio so it set me back by 1 semester but regardless I still would have been here for around 3 years.

tell your dad to thank his lucky stars that you’re spending an extra year at cc not UC.

look at how many upper divs you need to complete and (i didn’t know this part until I transferred) look at how many units you need that are outside of your major, some majors have zero where others have 15 (it also varies by the college of the major and which school). Then plan out, summer classes are fine. You can actually petition to take classes before the summer before the semester you were accepted. Winter classes probably won’t count (from what I’ve heard) but you should inquire to the Bio department of whichever UC you go to.

My friend transfered to ucsd in one year with a bio major…

I could have done it in one year easily, but decided to take two so that I could go at a slower pace and get a high gpa.

If you finish calc, bio and chem in two years, then you are good to tranfer. ochem and physics are recommended but not required. However, you’ll probably be a little behind once you transfer. And it might take you 5 years.

I finished calc, bio and chem in my first year and ochem and physics in my second. If you can do that too, then you’ll finish in 4 years no problem.

I will have O-Chem and Physics completed after this year but I will still need to take a bunch of Bio courses and Calc. My first semester at CC I had to take some intro Bio course which was a pre-req in order to take the higher level Bio courses. So I took that and then the following semester I messed up by taking Genetics which doesn’t help for transferring. And now this year I’m not taking any Bio at all bc I thought it would be too much and it didn’t look like I was gonna be able to transfer in 2 years anyway.

So yeah basically if I went to a different/better CC then I could have transferred in 2 years but i was dealt this bullshyt so I have to make do :(

I am in that same situation except that I just dropped the 2nd part of General Chemistry just before O-CHEm. I am dropping it because the teacher is ridiculously picky in giving full credit therefore giving me a C on most of my exams =… and I am retaking calculus 1 cause I took it last summer alongside 2 other classes… stupid yes. It is taking me 3years to finish all the prereqs, but I am applying to the UCs this fall and hoping they’ll still take me in.

take the full course at a different cc… you may even be able to find it online. although with all of these darn budget cuts I doubt it, all the classes I am taking this spring have 2 options, morning and evening tuesdays and thursdays lol

Not to sound to harsh but your dad sounds like he sucks. What parent *****es about their kid going to school? Ask him if he would rather you drop out and go work at mickeydees. this world needs under achievers you know.

Tell your dad you want to ride out the economy, that it only benefits you in the end…unless of course the rush for the 4 years is so you can go to med/grad school.
