I want to know a few things about dorms and food:

Are Suites or Halls better? If suites are the Tri towers good for OOS freshman, particularly Melcaf/Carroll? If Halls then is Turlington or Bragaw good for OOS freshman? (I excluded Alexander because I heard its GV)

Are suites coed? (meaning the rooms inside of them)

Is the food there tiring? How does the meal plan work, I'm pretty sure I my parents will get me the Freedom pass but what can I get with that?

How far away is the nearest Dining Hall from the central campus?

Is NCSU really a back-up school for UNC? That will make me not want to attend!

Are the Dorms out-dated?

How crowded are Halls, Bathrooms, Common Areas, and Dining Halls?

Is there a housing lottery for central campus?

Thanks!!

Personal preference. Halls you have the opportunity to meet a lot of people. Suites you get a better opportunity to get closer to fewer people. Neither is better, just depends on what appeals to you more.

No.

You can eat in any dining hall (besides Case at dinner) every 30 minutes with a Freedom Pass, and use 10 equivalencies per week. That means you can spend a pre-determined amount (around 6-7 dollars but don’t quote me) at The Creamery, Chick-Fil-A, or any other non Dining Hall Dining Facility on campus. If you’re a picky eater and only want to eat scrambled eggs and pasta, it’ll get tiring. They switch up menus quite a bit, so you shouldn’t worry too much.

From the Tri-Towers on Central Campus, Fountain is probably a 5 minute walk and Case is 6-7 minutes away.

No. If you’re choosing most STEM majors, NC State will be your first choice. I was accepted at both and chose NC State.

No! Many have been renovated in the last 2-3 years, and every one I have been in has been pretty nice.

Dining Halls will be crowded during peak hours, but not so crowded that you can’t find a place to sit. Common areas tend to be pretty empty unless it’s time for a popular TV show or a big group of people are getting together. I can’t speak for halls, and there was never crowding in my suite bathroom except for once or twice.

Not in the traditional sense. When accepted you put your top three choices down for housing and I think it’s assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. But why are you only considering Central Campus? I loved living in Lee.

@ncstatefreshman ok thanks for the reply but I have a few follow up questions:

Of the three towers which one is the best, which has a higher female population, and male population?

Economics is a STEM major right?

When matched for roommates for suites do they make all freshman suites or mix them with upperclass men?

Where would parties be, all dorms look small and strict?

Is move in day crazy for the towers?

Thanks!

Here’s a map of all the dining options on campus. You can click on each one to see the menu for the day. You can look every day to see how the options change.

Information about the meal plan options can be found here: [Meal Plans | University Dining | NC State](Summer + Fall 2023 Meal Plan Options : NC State Dining)

And no, NCSU is not a “back-up school” to UNC. They each have their merits and different atmospheres. A visit to each is helpful. I know plenty of people who were admitted to both and chose NCSU.

There are plenty of students for which NC State is preferred over UNC. My son is in-state and didn’t apply to UNC because he wants to be a chemical engineer. He has ACT 34 and is valedictorian, NC State is his first choice and would become his “backup school” only if he receives a ton (and it would have to be a ton) of scholarship money from one of the oos colleges he applied to.

@ncstatefreshman ok thanks for the reply but I have a few follow up questions:

I don’t think one is the best, and the male-to-female ratio shouldn’t really differ. There aren’t obviously more of one gender than another in either dorm.

In a broad sense, yes because economics is a social science. In the rigid sense (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), then no. NC State has other programs that are stronger than UNC besides most STEM fields, that was just a highlight.

Some are mixed, some are all freshmen.

Parties are in your friend’s apartments, fraternities, and very risky people’s dorm rooms. I think the risk is too great for me to host a party in a dorm, so most are off campus.

It’s pretty crazy but well managed. The people in charge know what chaos to expect and plan accordingly with parking, people to help move your things in, running the elevators, etc.

Thanks!

wildfactor,

EVERY answer above is spot-on right. Regarding move-in, I will add from personal experience: Moving our daughter into Bowen Hall as a freshman was one of the smoothest, most well-planned experiences. We went into the day dreading what we thought would be a hassle, and found the logistics and assistance excellent. It went so smooth, I was saying goodbye before I was ready! Good Luck!

Thanks for more info, But what I meant to say was is the tri towers more freshen oriented than Turlington or not because i’m not a FYC or GV kind of student.

When my S was at NCSU (class of 2009) , there were a lot of freshmen in the tri-towers.
