I actually thought even if I didn't apply for it this year, I could reapply next year, until they sent me back an email saying this:
"There would be no aid for you at Middlebury, which means you cannot apply next year either. There are no loans for you to apply for either. "

Quite cruel... Especially when they don't have any merit scholarships. Employment on campus sure can't meet my financial need. Any suggestions, people? I really hope we can discuss it a little bit, in order to find ways to help students like me. Thanks.

How can they say you can’t apply next year? From that linked article, it would seem that if your situation changes significantly, you can apply for additional aid and if you’re family lost everything, it would seem reasonable to apply for aid for the first time. Hmm… will have to look into that one… not that I want to tempt fate and hope my h’s business fails or anything!!

This doesn’t surprise me. What they are saying is all of their money is budgeted for, even if your situation should change, it would be tough luck.

One thing to keep in mind, even if a school allows you to apply after freshman year, it is only for people with unforeseen change to their situation - death/illness of a parent, lost of a job(many schools would view that as a temporarily situation, may not change their award)…If your situation has not changed from the time you applied to school, they are not going to give you FA the following year even if you apply.

barrylaoren, like me and many other people, you are stuck living in a world that does not exist anymore. In this new world, excellent students go to schools that in the old world would have seemed “second tier” or lower because these schools will pay excellent students to attend. Because we live in the old world, we can’t foresee that 5-10 years down the road, these “second tier” or lower schools will be producing exceptional graduates who, but for the financial earthquake, would have gone to formerly top-tier schools. It will be far less of a “black mark” to be a graduate from such a school because everyone will have lived through the same financial destruction and understand.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that you’re intl, barrylaoren??

it has always been this way for intls, long before the economic crisis…you have to apply for FA at the beginning to be eligible for the remaining years

when intls are not accepted need-blind, that is the only fair way to do it

You’re right, canadianemigre, I’m an international student, but the worst part is that on their transfer app the deadline for FA for 09 fall transfer applicants is actually Feb.1, which is why I didn’t apply for it (I thought I had missed the chance when began filling it out, which was after Feb. 1, and I never went to their FA webpage until after I was accepted.)

But yeah who knows if I would still be accepted if I had applied for it? I guess this is just the way it is.
