I am going to be a senior. I am applying early action to FSU.

I have a 4.3 gpa weighted, around a 3.8 or 3.9 unweighted. I will have had 4 APs throughout high school. I got a 25 on my ACT, an 1180 on my SAT, 1800 including writing. I am in National Honor Society and Model United Nations. I have about 150+ hours of community service at Biscayne National Park.

My "thing" is journalism. I started freshman year as a student in Introduction to Journalism, then I was a staff writer on the newspaper sophomore year, then I was entertainment section editor of the newspaper junior year, and this upcoming year I will be editor-in-chief of the paper. I started a zine about the local music scene around my town, and I started a blog about current events going on. I also do yearbook, even though newspaper is my passion.

I took a lot of random english type classes like Women Writers, Philosophy, Science Fiction, all honors. My school is sort of difficult, its a college preparatory school.

Note that I am taking both tests again. Hopefully I'll bump up my ACT to the high 20s and I want to try to break 1200 on SATs. My critical reading on SAT is 670, so that's strong, but the math is 510 (not my strong point) so I just want to bump that up a bit more.

I want to major in either English, History, or Political Science.

I posted this in the UF forum, but I honestly doubt they'll accept me and from what I hear FSU seems more like the school for me...a bit more laid back with a lot of school spirit? I don't know, but yeah, what do my chances look like?

parent2noles, I will apply to UF but I don’t really see it happening haha. They accept the best of the best and my SAT score is not amazing, nor is the rest of my application. I actually just got back from doing the UF Summer Journalism Institution, and they have an amazing college of journalism but I don’t know if I want to do that as a career.

I feel like I have a good chance for FSU, especially if I bump up my score a little bit, to get into the 1200s. I really do hope I get in. My counselor told me that all the big state schools look at is GPA and test scores. A lot of people told me that’s not true, so what’s the deal?

The application process is probably best started in the junior year. Apply early and designate FSU in your SAT/ACT paperwork as directed. Keep working on the SAT/ACT.

All right, my counselor suggested early action for FSU. The earliest I can take the SAT is October 10, and she said we can send in my stuff before and then let them know the SAT scores are on the way.

Will that give me a boost for being accepted?

350Z: Hmm, but what year was this? UF wasn’t so hard to get into a couple years ago but now it’s crazy.

Oh and general question, would these stats get me into UM? My parents want me to go there but I don’t want to, and I’m just wondering if I would even be accepted.

As a private school, Miami may be able to have more flexibility in admissions than FSU or UF. If you are interested, I’d suggest applying. You never know unless you try.

Vacation,
All of the top 10% students at my HS got into UF.
My SAT was 1360. Theirs were at least 100 pts less.
They got in, I did not.
It’s all about being top 10%.

Anyhow, I also got into UM.
That SAT score will hurt your chances there.

You think too highly of UF.
You can get into UF without a 1300 SAT, and without a 4.0 GPA.
I’m not a fan of UF, but you seem like you would really like to go there, but you don’t think you can get in.

I say you can get in. Your stats are not too bad, and if you can raise the math portion of your SAT scores, I say you can get in… Assuming your 150 community service hours were worthwhile. Your Journalism shows leadership, and that you found and stuck to one thing you were passionate about. That is good.

Apply early everywhere is my advice. And don’t have a “one-size-fits-all” app. Make each application unique to the school. Especially the essay. Spend time on your apps, make sure you have developed a resume that makes you proud.

My D1 was accepted to UF and declined the admission. She also qualified for UF Honors. My D2 refused to apply even though she’d almost certainly have been accepted (she was in the top 4% of her hs class as well as meeting GPA and SAT levels). We tried to get D2 to at least take a tour, but she just flat refused.

Yeah, Vacation you are putting UF on quite a pedestal. It is tough to get into, but not that tough. Last year was supposed to be the most competitive year, which bodes well for the class of 2010.

Your GPA is what helps you the most. Those with above a 4.0 UF GPA get admitted 85% of the time.

Hmm that does make me feel better. I guess the reason I act like its so high up is because I really just don’t want to get my hopes up. A good number of average kids at my school got accepted, but at the same time a good number of really qualified kids got rejected. Which is actually good news for me I guess.

We’ll see what happens then. But I’ll try to stay realistic.
