So...My SATs Were A Little Bit Higher Than I Expected...

I need to add some more schools, b/c I feel like my SAT scores opened up new possibilities for me that I didn't think existed. I would like to major in Computer Engineering.

My GPA (no BS/auto A+ classes): 3.43 (Consistent...3.44, 3.45, likely a 3.40ish this year).
My SATs: 800M, 760W, 600CR (Going to try and get up by October using Direct Hits)
APs: Chem (Jr), Physics B, Calc AB (or BC), Bio, US Gov't (all Sr)
Rest are honors classes.
I go to a private school.
Okay ECs (very consistent).

Extra info for DunninLA & Co. that I forgot:
My school is very competitive, one of the top one's in CT. Sends a fair amount of people to top school.
GPA is unweighted.
I'm ranked 31/220ish.
Academic Awards - No, leadership - Will find out next year :). Might be a Captain in one or two clubs.
Generally speaking, 2/3% of kids will go to HYPSM each year.

But based on this very general look, any schools I should be considering? (I didn't give you my current list, so I may see some repeats, but just suggest schools in my range. I will tell you guys which one's I already have on my list after you guys suggest them.)

would need to know some add’l info:

How competitive is your school?
Is our GPA weighted or unweighted?
What is your ranking in school… if not known, what do you estimate?
What % of kids in your school are traditionally admitted into: 1) HYPSM?, 2) the rest of the Top 20?, 3) the rest of the top 50?
Do you have any academic awards or leadership heavy extra curriculars?

My school is very competitive, one of the top one’s in CT. Sends a fair amount of people to top school.

2nd page bump.

Great SAT scores! I’ll suggest RPI, WPI, Villanova, UMD, VTech.

Do you mean that 2/3 of the students go to schools like HYPSM each year, or that 2 or 3 students go? Will your counselor check the box for most challenging schedule, or not? Are you likely to have good recs or great recs?

2 to 3% is not a very competitive school by top school standards, 30% is.

Look at CMU, you definitely have a shot and it is fab for all things computer.

^^hmom5 - Oh, ok then haha. Also - Had all we’ve seen so far. What do you think my odds are for CMU?

To have a solid shot at CMU work on your GPA, SAT CR section & do something interesting on the volunteer front this summer. (Take a good look at UMD’s College of Engineering–you have a chance at their Honors College & get some $$. They have a good reputation in computer science & you’ll be impressed with their facilities if you visit.) Good luck!

I am doing Computer Engineering, not Computer Science. I know the difference isn’t all that much, but it’s definitely there. I don’t think my GPA is good enough for any honors colleges anywhere. Such as UConn - average SAT is 1400 (ding, ding, ding) but they are also Top 5%. However, since that’d be in-state, they would know about my school’s reputation and how I would be Top 5% if I went to my local public school (not a horrible public school, but the kids are nothing like the kids I take classes w/ now).

Grades are a tad low but you may have a shot at ** Wake Forest, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech **

Georgia Tech is high on my list, but I didn’t have Johns Hopkins. WF doesn’t have a CompEng program, but thanks for the suggestions! More?

Also - quick question: when doing undergrad, should I be looking for top ranked schools or prestigious schools (we all know that Johns Hopkins is a very prestigious school, but Georgia Tech would be considered higher ranked for Computer Engineering iirc). Which one is more important for Undergrad? I do plan on going to Grad School, fwiw.

look at Michigan… great Engineering

I think your CR score needs improving. If it doesn’t go up, it can keep you out of top schools. You’re from Conn, so you’re not from a unique area for top schools.

Can your parents afford to pay $50k+ for the school of your choice? If not, then you’ll need to carefully choose schools that will either meet need or give big merit.

Yeah, we’re pretty well off, so money doesn’t matter (hence Northwestern, etc…). I’m going to get CR up (Direct Hits). Does anybody know the answer to my question above?

Which one is more important for Undergrad: top ranked schools or prestigious school. In other words, let’s just say that hypothetically, Harvard had CompEng (they might, idk) but it was only ranked #20. Whereas I could go to UMD ranked #5 (another hypothetical ranking). Would it be better to go to UMD or Harvard (Harvard = more prestigious but UMD = better ranked in engineering)?

Bump
10char

Cornell as a reach
Rensellaer Polytechnic as a match

Thanks, I’ll add Cornell. Already had RPI.

whats ur weighted gpa?
