Okay, so I have the last Orientation date that starts on the 18th of August.

What should I do / have done by then?

Do I need to register for classes already? Am I losing time?

You don’t register for classes until you’re at CTOPS. So maybe just be planning out your schedule with plenty of backup classes.

Relax and enjoy the rest of your summer. You’ll register for classes at CTOPS. Make sure you have any AP or IB scores with you. And I guess you’ll probably have to pack since the last CTOPS moves directly into their dorms, right?

Yeah, since I have the last CTOPS date I’ll be moving right in. I’ll be going down with all my stuff and everything…

EDIT: So wait, can I plan my classes ahead of time? I want to be able to schedule my classes as late as possible. Can I work on seeing what I can do now?

If you go on to ConnectCarolina on your MyUNC page, you can search for classes you want and put them in your “planner” and “shopping cart.”

cgb: That’s my orientation date too. Are you an international?

Do you meet with an adviser before choosing classes?

From what I remember you have a “group” advising session. When I did it 2 years ago it was me and three other people with one advisor. I put group in parentheses because my advisor gave us all a lot of individual attention. It might be different now. Someone who’s been to CTOPS recently want to chime in?

packerfan89 - Yep that is exactly the way mine was in June.

Hey welcome to UNC and congrats on getting in.

It’s been a few years since I’ve gone to CTOPS and had to register for classes, but when I was there they just gave us a sheet of open classes that met general requirements and we registered for those. There’s not going to be a lot of classes open, especially at the August 18 CTOPS, so you might not want to spend too much time planning. Mostly you just want to know which requirements you need to fill. (Hint: A.P. classes often meet requirements, so make sure you don’t accidentally take a class that you don’t need to.)

Don’t stress too much about registering at CTOPS. The schedule you get there doesn’t have to be your final schedule. The add/drop deadline isn’t until a few weeks into the semester, so you have plenty of time to switch your schedule around.

If you really want a class and it’s full, I would recommend emailing the professor or going to the class on the first day to see if the professor will add you. It’s not a sure thing, but I’ve had a lot of professors add me to classes just because I asked.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
