So really, how difficult is it to get in?

Hello everybody!

I am an incoming senior in high school this year in Los Angeles. I have recently become extremely interested in UBC, but I haven’t been able to find any decent stats concerning SATs, ACTs, and GPA. It all seems to be very mixed.

If anyone has an idea, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks!

It’s not that hard, but not that easy. The reasons you get conflicting feedback is that Canadians don’t need SAT, GPA, and ACT when applying. What we use, instead, is simply an average of our Grade 12 marks (that are in by May).

A BC student needs 91% for Science, and high 80 something for Arts. However, this is in a system with A being 86%.

Thus, you will probably need fairly good scores/GPA, but not phenomenal. I’ve heard people compare UBC to UMich, so probably the admissions stats will be similar.

I know a person who isn’t that strong academically… Ie below 1500 on their SATs, maybe 2 APs… etc.

That person got in… so did somebody else who was only a little better that this person.

Judging from those two students, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to get in. However, I have heard that graduating from UBC is very challenging.

Canadian students should not judge international acceptance difficulty, since the admission process for internationals are completely different. Canadians from BC have automatic admit VIA provincial Exams.

Getting in isn’t that difficult compared to other top schools. Doing well, getting scholarships are extremely difficult. Some faculties are extremely hard, others are very easy. Science, Business, are probably the two most difficult faculties to gain admissions to. I would imagine you would need a few AP courses and have done decent on the exam, a 3.75 and strong SAT score. Most of the kids in the dorms had scores around 35 on the IB exams. They also turned out to be average students.

For Arts a 3.50 and a 1800 SAT would probably be enough to get an admit.

Land and Food Systems, Forestry are probably the two easiest programs to gain admissions to.

Most of the Americans I know had offers from good schools in California (including, Stanford and Berkley), or were considering place like Boston. I my self had an Emory offer. So that should give you an idea what the middle bracket looks like.
