Yikes!
It’s certainly a good thing that someone was paying attention and the University Police were able to act.
Per the article and another one I found online - he just purchased the guns over the weekend. One is a blackpowder percussion pistol that is apparently being referred to as a shotgun. It appears to be a muzzleloading shotgun smoothbore pistol, circa 1850 or so, although probably a reproduction. Federally, I don’t think this is classified as a firearm.
The other is a semi-automatic handgun. Federal law has prohibited the sale of a handgun to anyone under 21 by a dealer for decades. The only way you can purchase a handgun in some states under age 21 is from a private seller. The caveat is you both have to be residents of the same state. This was apparently purchased by the MA resident in NC. If so that would be illegal. Basically there is no way for him to buy the semi pistol legally.

This link has a little more detail. Several laws were violated here as far as having weapons on school grounds anywhere in NC, legally owned or not.
“North Carolina law prohibits any person, including a concealed handgun permit holder, from carrying a firearm, openly or concealed, on educational property or at a curricular or extracurricular activity sponsored by a public or private primary school, community college, college or university.”
Over not getting into a fraternity? Jeez.
