So They Begin!

So January marks the beginning of the regional auditions process, and sure if anyone is in the same boat I am they are starting to get very excited and of course those nerves are starting to crawl their way in too! If anyone needs to vent or needs reassurance or last minute help I think us teens should start to get together help cheer each other on. Break a Leg Everyone! AND I hope to see some of you at the LA Unifieds!

Cate

Cate, it's natural to be excited and even a bit anxious as you embark on the college audition process. You are a performer, so you no doubt know how to use those nerves to fuel your performance. You are going to do great: break a leg!

And I send the same wishes out to all the students (and their parents) who are embarking on the college admissions process. Believe it or not, most of you will look back on this as a very special time full of excitement (and yes, some nerves, no doubt!) and a lot of togetherness. Next year at this time, you will be home from your BFA programs on winter break and will come back on this list to encourage those who are next in line.

Thanks so much MamaRose! people like you keep sites like this going and help fuel the rest of us as we embark on our journeys.

I want so much to give you guys something helpful. "Relax" yea right I know that is easy to say but you really should. Ok so here are my suggestions

Some of you may be putting this thing WAY out of perspective. You may be thinking if you don't get in THAT program..life and your future may be OVER. Know what? you are nuts! Someday you will audtion for a professional show. Do they care where you went to school? NO. They will care what you do in that 3 min audition. Can you act, sing, dance. That's it. They don't care you have a BFA or from where.

You are probably obsessed this is a college "audition". Well ...stop thinking of it that way. You know how you love to perform and hate to audition? This is a performance. Think of it that way. You have the role of a "College auditioner". You have practiced that "role" for months now. You know your songs, your know your lines. It's showtime!! You're on! Just go in there and have fun and perform. No one is going to boo or walk out or hit you over the head.

Try to not forget during this whole process that "things will happen for a reason". Some of you will get accepted, others rejected, and even some will go on to attend their "dream school" and realize after a semester or so that it actually isn't.

I have "one more" for the parents that are traveling with their kids, to please remember to have fun, and be comic relief rather than "the critic". This is a really neat time to spend with your child, and trust me, before your know it, it will be over. I will never forget what a great time I had traveling with my daughter, "getting lost" (we allowed for plenty of time, knowing I am not much of a girl scout :D), the laughs we shared, the "stuff sitter" she turned me into, safe keeping her things wherever we went, hearing her warm up, things that seem silly, but are oh so special, and dear to my heart now.

In closing, to all those of you embarking on their audition journey, safe travels, 'break a leg', and remember, we are rooting for each and every one of you!

Now auditioning as a transfer and NOT having my mom around, makes me realize how much I wish I had her wish me! Just knowing one person when you're at an unfirmilliar place, makes it better. I appreciate my mom SO much more now that she's not doing all this with me. So now, I look for other nice moms to be my stuff sitter.

tinysinger, I hope you take a moment and tell your mom what you said above. And you sound like such a nice person that I am sure there will be plenty of other "substitute" moms who will be more than happy to watch your stuff while you are in the audition room. Break a leg!

I spent my D's Unifieds weekend in Manhattan in total mood management mode. "What do you want for dinner? A burger? At the place where they're $25 instead of the place where they're $8? SURE. You want to see Legally Blonde for the 5th time? I'll wait in the TKTS line, you go back to the hotel and relax. You want to wait at the stage door even though it's 15 degrees? SURE. I'll go to Starbucks and get you a hot beverage to hold. WHATEVER YOU WANT." I hope she finds a REALLY nice nursing home for me.

Skwidjymom...thank you for the laugh!!!!
