So those extras beside a good GPA and MCAT for med. school

I was reading into a thread that was posted in the forum, but it - like most others - turned into a debate of who's smarter. :-)

I'm a senior at high school, and I'm wondering what kind of extra curricular activities I should get into. (I will try to get into a few leadership positions for these clubs)

So far I want to get into:
A church bible study
Rotary ( I believe it's called Rotarct for young adults)
Probably some science club
and something for creative writing.
Also research.

1) I'm wondering if these sound like a pretty good mix of things to get into.
2) Also I'd like to know if there is anything else you guys found to be extremely beneficial to you - whether it be academically, pre-medically, religiously, etc.
3) PLZ rank in the order of importance for med. school. I believe it would be:
Research
Rotary
Science Club
Church
Writing
4) Finally I'm gonna be going to my undergrad. studies from a below poverty line family, will I be able to use this to my advantage when applying to med. schools?
Thnx.

Creative writing, depending on how well you do it -- fan fiction on a Harry Potter board does not count, for example -- would be your second most important (behind research) if it's merely a hobby. If you actually get anything published -- and again, the internet does not count -- then that would perhaps be the top thing.

Research, research, research.
Do colleges have "science clubs?" I'm not sure what that is.

writing, any type.

Unless you are interested in a medical school that is affilitated with a religious organization I don't think the church bible study will do much for you. In fact, it's been my experience that top notch research hospital people are, for the most part, rather hostile to religion. I say that as a person who went to medical school and came from a very religious family.

I don't think anyone in the medical field is particularly impressed with rotary per se, but if you end up doing a bunch of good volunteer work, especially with sick people, that would look good.

I don't think that extra currics are as imporant to medical school admission as they are in college admission. You need to show that you have a life and that you care about others. I wouldn't worry about the EC's too much other than to make sure you can demonstrate you have the above two characteristics. Grades are much more important.
