so uh, how's the food?

I'm very big on food. Extremely big. I mean, I eat all the time. Literally. I am a fruit-a-holic. And a tea-a-holic, but I believe tea/coffee houses are rampant on campus. However, how is the food? Is there variety? Selection? How's the fruit? Do you guys have quality fruits? Grapes that aren't soggy? Apples that don't have worm holes? Yeah?

And yes, this is extremely important for me. If I got accepted to UChicago, I'll be fine with the lack of uhm, dare I say, good-looking men. I'm not a "typical" female.

So, how's the food? :]

If you eat at Bartlett, the food is excellent, but expect to pay out your ass. Last time I ate at Bartlett, I paid $9 (yes, $9) for a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink. I'm not on the meal plan, so it's probably $.50 cheaper for you, but ridiculous nonetheless.

Yeah, the food in Bartlett is pretty good. And I can say that as a vegetarian, who has to be choosier about what I eat there. There's always a ton of fresh fruit, which I eat every day. It's never been bad in my experience.

Yea, if you care about fruit, you will want to eat in Bartlett.

Since I live in BJ, I would say the food at Bartlett is MOST excellent.

Bartlett is AMAZINGLY GOOD. But really expensive.

I live in beej and I think the food is fine. I was pretty surprised during my first couple of weeks. It's only just now become a little redundant - the weekends are hit or miss and you can find yourself in a slump of "omgewidontwantthis" in the middle of the week.

I don't get the Bartlett hype. I've been there. Yes, it's some pretty good food. Yes, it's expensive. It didn't knock my socks off.

long live beej!

Bartlett isn't bad, but I would never describe it as amazingly good or most excellent. It's pretty good for the first week or two, and then you get sick of it and all the heavy, expensive meals that just don't make you feel too good afterwards. Sometimes I go there and just walk out after deciding that there is nothing I want to eat. Often I will just get fruit and cereal, or a sandwich. Most of my friends who ate there regularly last year agree. We try to cook in the dorm kitchen every so often so that we don't have to go to Bartlett. The service can also be terribly inefficient- today at lunch the line snaked around the entire room because they only had one register open, maybe two.

That said, it's probably pretty good compared to college food elsewhere. It's fine, and you get tired of it quick. But the fruit selection is pretty nice. Also, I do not notice any significant difference in quality among Bartlett, BJ, and Pierce.

But this is Chicago after all, and there are good restaurants both in Hyde Park and downtown when you get tired of campus dining.

This is breaking news as of today (ask IHC), but the dining system will be drastically different next year.

Dining halls will all be mostly made to order (as Bartlett is now), and with the exception of some possible grandfathering in of cheaper rates for current upperclassmen, it will be a fixed price all-you-can-eat for all the meals you want any time of day.

Take-out and easy guest swipes will still exist, but with stricter limits.

Got a link for this? No more minimum/modified?

It's not online since the details are still being debated. Talk to your IHC rep. There may still be min/mod for current second and third years while we are still here, but it would be temporary, and Bartlett would still be all-you-can-eat.

I know someone on here mentioned they were vegetarian, I am as well. Besides having good fruit, how are the vegetarian options?

Bumping this as another curious vegetarian.

For a cafeteria, pretty good. They always have some veg entrees, and most things can be made veg.

Overall, though, the food gets old fast.

go to u mart and get like 50 subs and store them in a cooler for the week... mmmmmmm

I was only there for 4 days for my official visit, and I went to beej and bartlett. Bartlett had a lot more selection and it was better to me at least. I would think that after a month the food would start to suck.

I smell a Labbie! If my money went to U-Mart and their sandwiches, I'd be dead broke. But I would be wonderfully satisfied.

Being a vegetarian here is okay. Lots of people do it, and I would say I'm about 75% of the way there. (I won't go out of my way not to eat meat, but I'm not going to put a bunch of turkey or roast beef on my plate). While I can't always say that the hot food is great, I've always liked the salad bar options at all three dining halls.

My son is a freshman, living in B-J. He's a vegetarian (mostly). From what he tells me, breakfast and lunch are quite good. Dinner, not so good. The worst, he says, is Sunday dinner.

Yeah, I'm a vegetarian and I eat at Bartlett. I'm pretty happy with the selection. They have a vegetarian/vegan bar which consistently has what I think is pretty delicious food (mmm, sweet potatoes, and the grilled eggplant...), and you can always get pasta (alfredo/marinara) or stir fry or salad bar without meat. I get Indian food whenever it's available, which is about two or three times a week-- curry veggies, lentils, and basmati rice with pita. I get grilled cheese & tomato at the grill every now and then when I want something junky. And there are always mashed potatoes and mac & cheese at the comfort food station (well, usually one or the other). I have been eating there all quarter and I'm not sick of it yet. I eat a lot of veggie burgers, too, which are available every day. And vegetable sushi!

I will agree that the hot vegetarian options aren't wonderful (tofu fajitas and vegetarian sloppy joes are NOT my thing...) but they always have enough sides that you can piece together a decent meal. Rice, beans, pasta & sauce, really delicious prepared vegetables. And they have some good entrees too, like ratatouille, and eggplant casserole (okay, maybe I'm alone on that one). I also spend a lot of my flex dollars on Amy's frozen dinners in Bart Mart, which are all vegetarian. But, okay, enough gushing about food.

The fruit is amazing. I don't know how I'll live without it over winter break.

oatmealia, you just made u chicago my top choice. hahaha.
