I am a junior now and I was wondering what other juniors are doing this summer for enrichment programs, research, etc.? Also, for those of you who have done research or plan on doing it, how did you pick your topic?
I know that I want to enter a project to Intel and/or Siemens-Westinghouse, having something to do with biology, but it seems like everything I can think of, has already been studied by someone else. Any suggestions?

I'm not smart enough for any competetive program/competition. Though I might try the cmu urm program, though the deadline is quickly approaching and I haven't really talked to my parents about it. I'm going to start fencing, (twice a week), and I would love to try archery, so I'm searching for someplace that offers lessons. If that falls through I'm going to volunteer at the humane society. whatever, going to a non-competetive school has its disadvantages. It's so rare for someone to get to research. Maybe 5 kids max out of 450.

Celebrian,
You have the stats to get into many programs that are designed for URMs. Based on your PSAT, your stats have got to be at least top 10% for black students nationwide. There are several excellent programs for URms who are juniors.

In addition to the CMU program, also check out programs at U of Wisconsin, Calvin College (Mich.), Union College (Schenectady, N.Y.) MIT and Grinnell. Calvin and Grinnell's programs are easier to get into than are the others. I think that with the exception of transportation costs and spending money, all of these programs are free, too.

There probably are even more programs that you could consider. Just Google "underrepresented minorities" "high school" "summer programs" or something similar. Your stats would give you good chances at several programs.

Is anyone here applying to B.U. for their Summer Research Internship Program or to SSP (http://www.summerscience.org)?

I am going to go to summer camp, have fun, and enjoy life. I don't think that is such a bad idea, I'd recommend it.

hehe that's what I've done every summer of my life. which is why I decided not to just do nothing this summer (not for college's sake, for my own) shakes hand with fellow slacker

Yeah, I know what you mean. It just seems like every college nowadays wants to see a lot of ECs, and with a lack of them, what else to make up for them better than a summer program?

I'm not your typical CC'er, I won't cry if I don't get into my reach school. I was taught that it's what you do there that counts. so yes I'll try for the best of my ability, but I'm not going to enter programs I know I won't like for a college's sake

You are a junior right?

yeppers I am go 06'

fair enough, I'm not going to do anything academic over the summer, but I think it's a good thing as long as you're doing something for your sake. I'm 06, too

July: travel with my family (hooray!)
August: hopefully PSYL (Pearson Seminar on Youth Leadership)
maybe learn how to drive somewhere in between
