So what classes are you guys taking this semester?

What year are you? Major? Intended Major? Taking DECs? Credit Load? Care to share? I'll start.

Third Year - Senior - PSY B.A. Major / History Minor

HIS 318 (DEC I) - Intellectual, Cultural, Society of Europe
WST 102 (DEC F) - Introduction to Women's Studies
CSE 110 - Introduction to Computer Science
PSY 260 (DEC F) - Survey in Cognitive Psychology
PSY 346 - Health Psychology
PSY 359 - Topics in Biopsychology - Drugs & The Brain
PSY 487 - Independent Research in Psychology
21 credits total...

anyone taking any of the above?

I thought 19 credits was the max. Needless to say that's A LOT of psych.

Anyhow, this is my schedule as a second year sophomore, Biochemistry major:

CHE 321: Organic Chemistry I
PHY 121/123: Physics for Life Sciences Lecture and Lab
MAT 126: Calculus B
PSY 103 (DEC F): Introduction to Psychology
CHE 487: Research in Chemistry (I was thinking about doing research in Biochemistry and register under BIO 487 but I just liked the research in CHE a lot more drug discovery is COOL, even though I am a Biochem major).

17 credits total.

I was at 19 credits but I dropped an Orgo Lab because IMO this is ENOUGH work as is. Of course every class of mine has a Lect/Rec except for PSY.

Nope sorry. I am a bio major. I am a freshman. I am taking:

BIO 202- Molecular Bio
CHE 131 & 133- General Chem w/ Lab
MAT 126- Calculus B
WRT 101- Freshman Writing
SSO- Intro to SBU

Total Credits: 15

Entity, wats ur major-- chem? Sorry nvm. Did you take all ur bios?

I took BIO 201/202, before Fall 2007, so I don't have to take all of those labs (204 and 205). I am going to take 203 next semester.

Eva - are you planning on doing Social Work out of college?

Entity...they raised it to 23 now. For some reason. but they added restrictions, 23 credits max for those with gpa 3.0 or higher is automatic on SOLAR, 23 for 2.50-2.99 but gotta fill out an application to request petition at the registrar. 2.50 and below no raise.

but of course 19 credits is more than enough for bio/chem/engineering majors...I understand it's a lot of work other than readings n labs

For entry level jobs yeah. I might just take a year off to land on a job and then go for my masters in school psychology or just general psych and try getting in ph.D. Or I'll do part time studies. I'm not even sure what the heck I'm doing yet. I haven't gotten recommendations (still requesting for 4 months already), haven't taken or prepared for GRE, Gre Psych yet. ACK! Such chaos. I need to go to the library and see those counselor for Degree Audit something and the Psych department's advisor...SOON...

blazinyan300, how come you're in SSO? is that required? i thought it was optional.

I wish SSO wasn't mandatory. It is a complete waste of an hr of my time. I tried everything to drop that class, but SBU got all personal and stuff and began screaming at me. I felt like I committed a crime. I also have these useless papers to write and visit all of these conferences and stuff. I want to drop that class so badly, but I can't. Any advice for me and my career path/schedule

hm....I'm not really sure how biology major goes. but I do have friends in this field on campus. I know they start loading more biology classes each semester 2-3 courses should be enough and then 1-2 (or 3 if you can handle it) for DEC's. But again, if any of you would like to just focus on majors/minors classes while on campus and have nothing much to do over the summer in the city, I do recommend taking DEC's in Stony Brook Manhattan. You can apply for Summer TAP. I took 4 classes (12credits) which is more than enough, 2 classes per session and it turned out fine, it's kind of intensive.

Have you look at the bulletin on biology major yet? they do have a good sample of credit load and number of bio courses that you should take. Although I know many people does not follow it. But it's good if you can plan out the 4 years or the next 2 years schedule for now. Therefore, you know where you're at. I did that myself during one of those winter break. It took me a few hours. You should also print out a copy of Degree Progress from Solar (it's free in the Library or Administraton building, won't bite your SINC printing payroll). You can always refer to that to count up how many credits you need to graduate. Print a copy of the Biology Major bulletin on stony's site to track down which class you have completed and passed and which ones you still need to take to fulfill the degree requirement.

Like any other major it's important to start doing research as soon as you are able to adapt to college education. If you think you can handle everything, won't stress out, then go for Research EC's. Most of the time you can find it posted on bulletins in your major's department. Or you can join the Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Just get involved in something to make it look good on your application for graduate school (if you plan to go). It's never too early to start doing research. It's the best way to get to know professors and get advices from them or graduate RA's.

Get to know some bio majors people who are older than you. Juniors, Seniors and ask what they plan to do (of course in a conversational way since they're not really the ones with experience yet).

Remember to ratemyprofessors.com your professor before registering classes. It's helpful so you know which one is hard and which one is easy. You can balance it out to see which subject you would need to focus more time on. Always take easy DEC's they're a bonus to pull up your grades.

Last but not least, if you declared major, make sure you visit the bio Major Department's advisor at least 2x in the 4 years of college. They give good advices as well and you will get a copy of the list of biology classes offered for the next semester in advance..........alright, I talk TOO MUCH.

Thanks for the advice. I already have a research position for this term, but I doubt that i will take it b/c of my course load. Maybe next term b/c I wont have calc.

blazinyan take it easy u seem too tense about college...just take each semester at all time...ur too worried about every little move you make..take a chill pill and enjoy ur college experience

I get what you mean bran, but I can't repeat my mistakes from high school. I need to be on top of everything. Med school admission is tough b/c there are only 125 med schools in all of US, with like millions of kids applying yearly. I need to have a fighting chance and with that, I need to have a good gpa, good ecs, and take all my pre-requisitives in an intelligent manner. Being paranoid is how I deal with it. I am sorry, but I can't change now.

Unfortunately no matter how hard u try ur gonna make only more mistakes. That's why its good to try to relax. Being paraoid/uptight only makes you prone to more mistakes. But you are your own man so decide on your own intuition what you choose to do with your life.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to relax.

hey everyone!

i'm a sophomore. and bio major.

i'm taking:
bio 202- cellular & molecular bio
bio 204- intro bio lab I
bio 208 (dec h)- cell, brain & mind
che 131/133- general chem I and lab
anp 120- intro to physical anthropology

freshman

undecided major, premed

math 203-multivariable calc w/ apps
bio 202
wrt 102
psy 103
sso 101
simple schedule :)

Would you all stop being so pre-med please.....gosh. Why is everyone at SBU pre-med. It gets annoying.

Wow izzy. We are in the same bio class. What lab section and time are you in. I am in CHE 131 & 133 also. Let's maybe meet sometime, if you want.

Everyone is basically pre-med in SBU. It is a popular major for this school.

Hey spark, when are you taking chem, soph yr? I am just asking. It is cool and surprising that so many freshman are in bio 202 this yr. maybe we could meet, if its ok w/ you.

i have mayr [lecture 01] for chem. and lab... section 71.

i still cant believe that theres over 1000 students in bio 202.... thats ridiculous.

lol. a lot of ppl start off being pre-med but change their minds after a year or two...

I have mayr also, but I am in section 2, during the afternoon. I am in lab section 24. Well bio 202 is a necessary class for a lot of ppl. To me this isn't surprising. Is it hard for you to manage your time? I guess it is a tad hard for me b/c I am new to SBU. However, I guess that I will need to adjust. Quick quest, did you take a yr of calc in freshman yr b/c I was told that for a bio major, since I have AP credit and I am currently taking MAT 126, I don't need anymore calc, just a semester of stats and I am golden. I am basically trying to get advice and confirm the advisor's advice. I am pre-med also. Sadly we have bio and chem finals with 30 min-1 hr break in between. It'll be a long and hard day.

yea i took mat 126 first sem. and thats it. im taking ams 110 nxt sem. and thats as far as im going in math

and dont worry about the whole time thing. youll get used to it. i think i have way too much time on my hands sometimes.

and having 2 finals on the same day is not such a big deal... the only thing is that you cant review too much for the 2nd one during the break. but it wont be too bad.
