So what classes did everyone take freshman year?

So what classes did everyone take freshman year?

First semester: 5.111, 8.01x, 9.00 (Psychology; was a HASS-D/CI-H but no longer is), 18.01.
Second semester: 7.013, 8.02x, 18.02, 21L.004 (Major Poets; HASS-D)

My husband
First semester: 3.781? (Intro to Archaeology), 3.091, 8.01, 18.01A/18.02A, freshman seminar (on the Mars rovers)
Second semester: 18.03, 16.00 (intro to course 16, not required), 8.02x, STS.001 (HASS-D)

First semester: 18.01, 3.091, 7.012, 21F.716 (Hispanic lit, did not satisfy any multi-letter HASS requirements), MAS.something or other (advising seminar)
Second semester: 18.02, 18.03, 8.02, 21H.105 (HASS-D, CI-H)

As you might guess, I tested out of 8.01. The only thing that did not work well for this schedule was the 18.02 and 18.03 at the same time. I did not like this, and if I could do it over I would have tried to take 18.01A instead.

First semester: 5.112, 8.01, 18.02, 24.900 (intro to linguistics)
Second semester (had sophomore standing): 8.022, 18.03, 6.01, 6.041, 14.01 (but hated this class, so I dropped it ~6 weeks in)

This worked really well for me, except for the fact that I didn’t like my HASS second semester and now need to take two HASS classes some other semester (which won’t really be a problem, I think). I also wish I’d taken 8.012 first semester, and maybe 18.034 second semester, since I hear it’s a good class. Neither fit into my schedule, though, sadly.

First Term: 18.01, 7.012, 21H.104 (dropped 8.01)
IAP: 6.270, 7.391, 9.97 (got 12 units)
Second Term: 8.011, 18.02, 21M.051 (dropped 6.00)

First semester: 18.02, 8.01L, 3.091, 3.986 (Intro to Archaeology, HASS-D)
IAP: 6.270, 8.01L
Second semester: 18.03, 6.01, 8.02, 24L.003 (Reading Fiction, HASS-D, CI-H)

I should’ve been careful to take 2 HASS-D / CI-Hs so that I’d be done with them now! Also, getting the Communciation requirement warning was annoying. I also wish that I had taken 5.111 instead of 3.091, but my big tip is to make sure you take a CI-H when you’re on pass/no record because papers really suck.

Is it a lot more work if you take four classes plus an advising seminar rather than four classes and no seminar?

It depends on the seminar, but most seminars aren’t a lot of work. Mostly they’re just for fun and free food.

Sounds good to me. :D

First: 3.091, 18.01A, 8.01, 24.02 (HASS-D, CI-H), 12.S56 (advising seminar)
four classes + seminar worked out fine for me
IAP: 18.02A, 2.971
Second: 8.02, 18.03, 12.080, 11.123, 21W.731 (CI-H)

My seminar was basically zero work (meaning no homework was assigned outside of the scheduled meeting time), free dinner once a week, and quite possibly the most fun thing I did at MIT. I mean, I also had the coolest seminar ever. =)

Most involve very little work, and you can gauge which vary from this trend just by reading their descriptions.

Yeah, the seminars are pretty awesome, and most involve little to no work. But I wouldn’t advise doing a seminar just to get the extra 6 units of credit, because it can get annoying to go to a class each week that you have no interest in, even if you aren’t doing a lot of work for it.

My advice, if you find a seminar that really interests you (and there are a TON out there), don’t hesitate to sign up. The workload isn’t bad, but you’ll still probably learn a lot from it (or at least have fun, meet some new friends, and get some free food). But if you don’t really like any of them, don’t bother with it.

1st semester: 18.01A/02A, 8.01, 5.112, 17.40 (US Foreign Policy)
IAP: Finished up 18.02A (it is intended to be finished during IAP)
2nd semester: 7.013, 8.02, 17.037 (American Political Thought), 21W.735 (Writing and Reading the Essay)

1st semester: 5.111, 8.012, 18.01, 21M.030 (Intro to World Music, HASS-D cat3 + CI-H), 21L.A21 (RBA seminar)
2nd semester: 7.013, 14.01, 15.354, 18.02

My seminar consisted of a group of Next House froshies sitting together in the lounge, eating free food, and writing a really goofy story. Stress relief? Check.

1st semester: 5.112, 7.012, 18.02, 21H.301 (The Ancient World: Greece)
2nd semester: 5.12, 8.02, 9.00, 18.03

Did anyone take 7.012 in the fall and then 3.091 in the spring? I dislike bio and have a weak background in it, so I want to get it out of the way under pass/no record, but I love chem and know that I won’t have sadoway in the spring. How is the spring 3.091 professor?

Chemistry in the spring is taken almost exclusively by people who failed it in the fall.

And, at least among my friends, the impression was that 7.013 was easier than 7.012, so even if you have to take it on A/B/C/NR, it might be an easier row to hoe.

Seconded.

Although I won’t go so far to say that chemistry in the spring is “exclusively” taken by people who failed it in the fall. My 5.111 class in the spring was at least over 50% 7.012 students who couldn’t fit chem into their first semester schedule (there were still ~150 to ~200 students in 7.012 fall 2007).

My frosh schedule:

Fall: 7.012, 8.01, 18.02, 17.40, Terrascope
Spring: 5.111, 8.02, 14.01, 21F.703, 7.URG (urop for credit)

What I would do if I can do it again:

(based on a Course 7 schedule)
ASE: 8.01
Fall: 5.111, 18.02, HASS, HASS, advising seminar (NOT terrascope)
Spring: 7.013, 5.12, 18.03 (for fun and knowledge), 8.02, 7.URG or another HASS

Are you testing out of anything?
