See...my problem is I'm doing 32L which is like, the most failed class at duke plus a lab, and then I suck at BC calculus...lol. I'm thinking I'll get myself adjusted to college life and classes and do the math and chem 2nd semester. Have fun with 23L and 31L:)

Yeah-- I know people who survived (and did pretty well!) with Chem & Math. And you won't be screwed or whatever without math first semester... very few people I know took it first semester, and I'd say that only half the people I know even took it within the first year.

I want to pick these classes:
Econ 55 Intermediate Econ
Math 41 One Variable Calc
Poli 166 Congress and the President
Psych 49S Psychology Seminar

I don't know if thats going to be super hard, because Math 41 sounds tough, and Poli is designated as W...anyone else taking similar classes?

Aight...thanks for the info bluestar. I was really nervous because it seems like I'm the only one NOT taking a math class. lol.

Changing classes... Writing 20, Engineering 53L, Biology 25L, Math 103... sounds too hard lol

Ok, so due to some miracle from GOD...I got a 4 on BC Calc. The grader must have appreciated my letters I wrote to them. So I definitely don't want to take 103, so can I take my credit for 31 and reject 32 credit? Not that it matters yet...but I was jw.

im very happy with my ap scores as well...all that work paid off, I can skip some of those intro classes :)

yes... now that I know my ap scores, I feel that high school and all of it's little details are officially over and I can look forward to college! As for credit, looks like overall, I'll be skipping bio 25L, Math 31 and 32, music 55, and all spanishes below 63. Good deal indeed.

does anyone know about Duke's policy regarding transfer credit from other colleges - I took some courses at a local community college and wanna know if I can get credit for, gonna call and ask tomorrow. I sent in my official transcript from there, is there a separate form to complete or is that basically all thats needed. thanks.

Duke's very good with accepting credits from 4 year colleges. I'm pretty sure they don't accept community college credit. Give them a call anyway and see what happens though.
There's a transfer credit request form that you fill out when you're a student and looking to take classes elsewhere for the summer.

On the topic of AP scores...I got a 5 on Spanish Language, and I know I want to take Spanish in the fall. Does that place me into Spanish 101? I'm kinda worried because I'm already taking the accelerated Chem class and Math 31L, and I don't want to DIE my 1st semester...do I sound crazy?

Also...not this semester, but eventually, I'm going to be taking Bio, and it says on the website that a 5 on Bio gives me credit for Bio 19...but I don't see that anywhere on the schedule. What exactly DO I place out of with that?

Ahhh, this is so annoying!

a 5 on bio places you out of 25L

also, a 5 on spanish makes you ELIGIBLE to take any 100-level course. You are not required to take it... you could take 63 or 76 as well, provided there is room.

lol yeah, I'm ignoring my AP score and placing into the lowest level French class I can. I have little faith in my French skills. :p

If you're confident about Spanish, then go ahead and try for a 100-level course...maybe try to get a permission number for one of those smaller, more focused seminars.

ok changing classes here too

Final classes

Math 41
Writing 20
EGR 53
EGR 10
Intermediate Economics 55D

abduke - is that akashbansal by any chance?

yep-nice guess

Getting a 5 on AP Spanish Language does place you into 101 (or any class that has 76 as a prerequisite, I believe). However, I've heard 101 is actually harder than some of the other Spanish classes. It really just depends on how comfortable you are with your writing skills and who your professor is. I went into 110S after getting a 5 on AP Language junior year of high school (although I did take spanish at a local university during my senior year of HS). The reading in 110S is tough but not impossible. If you're not thinking about a major/minor in Spanish, you may consider 104 or maybe 105... i've heard 105 emphasizes more speaking skills and group work, and has less reading and writing.

yay, they changed the time of my writing class for FOCUS in such a way that I can now schedule my chem lab for wednesday. My new dilemma is if I should keep the morning lecture. My option is to keep my MWF 8:45-9:35 lecture and have 30 minutes to get to my writing 20 class, or choose the MWF 11:55-12:45 lecture and have 35 minutes to go from writing to chem, and then 30 minutes to go from the lecture to the lab on wednesdays. The upside to the later lecture is that I can sleep in more, but the downside is that I essentially have five hours of chem on wednesdays, whereas having the morning lecture would allow me to have a short break from science with my writing class. any ideas?

104 is about half freshmen, difficulty depends on the teacher...

Seahorse id recommend having the 1155 lecture. Gross Chem is WAAYYYYY out of the way. You will want to make as few trips there as possible. Also, you can go to either chem lecture its the same lecturer, it doesnt matter which your actually signed up for, at least thats how it was first semester last year. Also youll probably find out within two weeks that if youve ever been exposed to chemisty before in your life that attendance at lecture is unnecessary. I never went after week 2 except for the tests and still got an A its not a bad class if youve had good background in chem (not even AP necesarrily just a good intro chem class in high school).
