I hear that all the time but don't actually know what it means...

It means that they want to see your 7th semester grades before making a decision. They tend to use it for borderline students to see whether or not they’re improving.

My son has a spot at Purdue (COE - Honors) , but his friends are going to MSU COE. All of his friends as well as my son have very high ACT scores, grades, etc and went through the IB program together. Many were going to UofM or Purdue, yet selected MSU. My son did not apply so, he did not get into MSU.

Well, he really wants to join them. These kids are very smart with high scores and grades, and he really wants to join them (ACT’s in the 34-36 range with all IB advanced science and math course.

My husband called MSU Admissions in early May, and they said “there was still time and room for fall 2012” so submit your application and “The Office of Admissions has not yet closed admissions for the fall of 2012”

Thus, he submitted his application to MSU about 4 weeks ago May 2012.

He has not received a response from MSU yet, and other kids (other friends) applied early and received a “deferred enrollment” whatever that means.

Can anyone explain the details of MSU’s deferred admissions? MSU Admissions seems to keep this a mystery.

Q: If you apply for admission in the fall 2013, but are put into the “deferred” pile for Spring 2014, does this mean you have a guaranteed spot for the Spring 2014, or does this mean they will reconsider your application along with other applications in the Spring and you may or may not have a spot ? MSU’s website says they consider “deferred students, new students, and other factors…etc”.

WHO CAN HELP?

Q: Does MSU and admit those in the deferred pile on a first come first serve basis, or those that accepted the deferred offer first, similar to UofM Waitlist?

Q: Does MSU rank those in the deferred pile and pick and choose who they let in on the deferred list, i.e. a deferred status does not guarantee you a spot as what it means for other colleges such as UofM.

MSU Office of Admissions is not answering this question when asked directly, and keeps their cards close to their chest.

Q: If you receive a deferred admission for Spring 2014 and attend a Community or other college for Fall 2013, do you need to re submit your application as a “transfer student” or do you just go ahead to the school and transfer your credit?

Can anyone shed some light on this very confusing process?

Thank You

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank You

I know several kids who were deferred to the spring term for admittance for the 2012-13 year, who took classes at a community college in the fall. The student should talk to the admissions office and find out who to talk to as to which classes would be optimal.

I know one student who was recently moved from spring admit to fall admit. This student does not need aid and is a legacy.

Early application is a good thing at MSU, the class does fill up and latecomers might find themselves deferred until spring. This is different from the OP’s use of the word “deferred” which is in regard to the college wanting more information before making a decision. The use of the word deferred by EEDegree is referencing the practice of accepting students but delaying their start until spring when space is available in the freshman class from 1st semester “melt.”
