I am just beginning to think about DD's transition to college. She will start at Dartmouth in the fall. She is my first going to college, so I am sort of clueless. Can someone tell me what are some of the things she should plan to bring--besides warm clothes and basic personal stuff? We live far away, so we need to plan ahead.
Also, I am confused by the DOC trip -- so you go on the trip before you move to the dorm???
I am sure we will hear from the school about these things, but I am curious in the meantime.

DOC trip sessions are divided into two sets of sessions, the first set of sessions intended for students who live close enough to fairly conveniently go home after the session (early September) and come back for orientation later that month. Students who live further select the later trips. When they arrive on campus, they are allowed to get their dorm key and deposit their items in their room - no more. After their trip, even if it ends a few days before official orientation, they are allowed to live in and set up their dorm rooms. So parents either come to campus with their children at the time of the DOC trip and take their parting then (its kind of abrupt for parents but in the end the DOC trip is a great way to cut thru a lot of the parting anxiety for the students and it ends up making for a really good transition) or they send their kids to the DOC trip by plane, whatever, with the minimum they will need for a few days and plan to arrive with the rest of their items in time for official orientation, or they come up twice, I guess.

Your daughter will definitely be given a list of things to bring (but be forewarned that she will be first hearing from Dartmouth long after her friends are first hearing from their schools - once information starts coming in its plentiful, but its difficult to go so long without some kind of mail). Meanwhile, take a look at the information on the website for ideas:
