So what is JHU like?

What are the students like mainly. Is it nerdy, party, or what kinda of school? And is there anything special someone should know about it.

Overall, I would say Hopkins has a diverse and wide range - there are so many different kinds of students that attend this school. There’s not one “main” type of student that you’ll see.

There was a similar post like this somewhere and I had said this:

“In terms of cliquey-ness: I don’t think Hopkins is cliquey. I’m friends with people from different races, teams, majors. I would like to point out something about the FFC. The teams often come from practices, so of course they usually sit together. And as for the races hanging out with their own race - I think that’s human nature. We’re inclined to interact with those who are most like us. In terms of the social scene: I would say Hopkins is both. Yes, we party a lot. But at the same time, a lot of us are very dedicated in our studies. Anyone can fit into Hopkins very easily - some are hard partiers, while some are very studious, or some are in between. That’s what I love about Hopkins. In terms of sororities and fraternities: Greek life definitely exists at Hopkins. Frats and sororities often host parties but many also go to bars and other non-Greek parties. Also, some just stay in and chill at the dorms. You can always leave campus and check out Fell’s Point or the Inner Harbor (especially with the Collegetown shuttle - it’s free). There’s a lot to do. In terms of competitiveness: Hopkins is not competitive - from my own experience, instead, students and my friends have been the opposite - they are willing to help me, give me notes, etc. I often study with kids that are in my class or go to the library with people.”

Currently I am a freshman and applied ED here. Def do not regret it.

Also, this thread might help - a lot of good questions were asked on there.

Academic, Research-oriented
Engaged out of the classroom
Athletic
lots of international students - campus feels very global
arts-oriented (music, theatre, dance, cultural affiliations)

Really depends on what you compare Hopkins with.

International? Yes, but being an international student myself, I’d choose any school in Cambridge/Boston area or the likes of LSE/Oxbridge over Hopkins (in terms of being “international”) as those places are simply the most “global” schools you’ll find on this planet.

The same thing would go for out-of-classroom extra-curriculars. It really depends on which crowd you hang around with most of the time. Some students are naturally more engaged and often take on leadership roles and new initiatives than many others. And it does take a lot perseverance and independent will to bring about new initiatives and changes on campus.

^^What are your fave things about JHU?

Do you have any data to back it up or just hearsay?

International students (Class of 13):

Harvard: 9%
Hopkins:11.1%

bump that bump so I am going to bump

there are a lot of asians here. so if you are asian that may be a good thing, but if you are a non-asian that may be a horrible thing. generally, they tend to be the most academically focused students on campus (albeit they forfeit a social, athletic, artistic and generally well-rounded life) in the pursuit of becoming a doctor or other medical professional that their “first-generation American” parents believe is the only way to a stable future.

Hmm. Not all of them are pre-med. Some of my friends aren’t even on the pre-med track. Not all of them forfeit a social, athletic, artistic, etc life. I know some that do sports, some that party, etc. That’s just a stereotype. That can be applied to anyone, especially those who are pre-med. (And even those who are pre-med from which I have seen have a pretty well-rounded life).

@collegekid4 that was kinda racist…

Let’s not attack collegekids4’s observation.
Of course not EVERY asian at JHU is a pre-med but many are. I would not be surprised if BME/a pre-med track is the most common major among asian students at JHU.
Harder majors require greater sacrifices especially socially.
And you can not deny that it is a commonly held belief in asian culture that becoming a doctor is the holy path to a stable and successful life.
So in other words, yes this is stereotyping but when you ask a question like “So what is Hopkins like?”-- the answers will be based upon the conclusions that a person draws through observation.

-very Asian. officially 25-27% or so, but in reality, more like 40%, when you count “other” and the platoon of Korean internationals (probably nearing 50%-60% with graduate students included)
-strong pre-med culture (and yes, if you conducted a survey, I would guess that 70% of Asians are pre-med, at least around that percentage of the ones I know are…)
-Self-segregated campus (though not as much as at larger universities)
-strange town-gown relationship that centers on race
-students sometimes overly concerned about grades
-some great professors, but others are obviously more interested in graduate students
-plethora of research opportunities, especially for people interested in medicine
-weak career services
-not enough places to study on campus(though this is changing soon)

i didnt mean for my post to sound racist, as i am not a discriminatory person, but the overwhelming amount of predominately asian intense pre-meds is a huge aspect of hopkins’ academic life that is not mentioned simply because people are afraid of being called racist for stating it. I’m not saying that this is for the better or worse, i am simply reporting a significant side of hopkins that prospective students should to be aware of. many people i know would reiterate this same sentiment…

Iamright’s comment that it is a “self-segregated campus” - not necessarily. I disagree - a lot of us are friends with many different social groups, which is nice about Hopkins. However, it IS true that we have a tendency to socialize/interact with those who are most like us, but that’s human nature and you will see that on any campus.

bj13, i think comparatively, Hopkins is not as self segregated as some schools such as Berkeley, it is probably in the middle range. the schools that are most integrated are those without substantial non-white populations which makes it necessary to interact with whites.

collegekid14 is correct in his observations about Asians and premed. it DOES affect the overall atmosphere of the school in what i would say is a negative manner. if noticing things about race is “racist” then this world is doomed. but i don’t know many pure “grinds”, many Asians are involved in art, music, and starcraft 2.

So JHU is petty much nerdy?

Any school ranked this high is going to have a “nerdy” perception. If you’re looking at schools as good as Hopkins and are worried about nerdy people, you probably should look elsewhere. With that said, while there are a lot of people who you’d probably classify as “nerdy” at Hopkins, there are plenty of others who wouldn’t be perceived that way.

Not like “nerdy” - I would say a lot of the students here have a drive and are very dedicated to their studies; which I guess, can come off as “nerdy.” Also like JHU2013 said, there are a lot of other people who aren’t like that. It’s a wide spectrum at JHU - those that party often, those who are in the middle, and those who devote most of their time to their studies.

Okay good I kinda like nerdy people
